US President Donald Trump has suggested that a deal regarding the Strait of Hormuz might be revealed as soon as Wednesday or Thursday. This comes as discussions between Iran and Oman are reportedly advancing towards the reopening of this crucial waterway, which could potentially contribute to ending ongoing conflicts in the region.

While speaking to reporters in California, Trump stated, “It could happen. Tomorrow or the next day,” and mentioned that significant progress has been made in the negotiations. His remarks were prompted by an Axios report speculating an imminent announcement.

The speculation regarding a breakthrough in talks also had an effect on the oil market. Brent crude prices fell by 1.2 per cent, dropping to $78.43 a barrel early on Wednesday, reflecting investor sentiment surrounding the possibility of improved shipping conditions in the region.

According to unnamed regional officials who spoke to The Associated Press, the evolving agreement being discussed would permit vessels to enter the Persian Gulf through a route supervised by Iran, while exiting through a pathway overseen by Oman. During a press interaction, Trump reiterated his stance against implementing tolls in the waterway, declaring, “I’m not going to let them charge,” adding that any charges would be imposed by the US instead.

The Strait of Hormuz has traditionally been an international waterway, but it has faced disruptions following military actions by the US and Israel against Iran on February 28. Currently, shipping has decreased significantly due to Iranian attacks during the ongoing conflict, with approximately one-fifth of the world’s oil and natural gas historically passing through this strategic route.

As the pressure grows on Trump to bring an end to the conflict, particularly with rising fuel prices amid upcoming midterm elections, he has fluctuated between assertively threatening military action and advocating for diplomacy. On Monday, he noted that the US was engaged in talks with Iran, referring to it as Tehran’s “last chance” to achieve a resolution without further military engagement. He outlined a phased approach, with the primary step focusing on reopening the straits, followed by denuclearisation efforts.
