Apple is reportedly working on a new feature that would enable users to copy and paste content between iPhones and Windows PCs. Traditionally, transferring information such as links or recipes between these devices has involved cumbersome methods, such as emailing oneself or using cloud-based note-taking apps. This forthcoming functionality reportedly aims to streamline that process significantly.

According to reports from MacRumors, the impetus for this update stems from a request by Microsoft, leveraging the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA). Under the DMA, large technology firms termed “gatekeepers” are obligated to ensure that their systems can operate effectively with competing platforms. Currently, Apple offers a seamless copy-and-paste function called Universal Clipboard within its own ecosystem, but Windows users have not had a similar experience.

Microsoft has advocated for a more integrated system, arguing that the ability to copy text between devices should be intuitive and not feel like an additional task for users. The anticipated update would reportedly facilitate smoother interactions between iPhones and Windows devices.

How the Copy-Paste Feature Will Function

At present, the security protocols in iOS restrict third-party applications from accessing an iPhone’s clipboard unless such applications are actively open and the user permits access each time. Apple’s proposed feature would shift this paradigm by treating a paired Windows PC akin to a connected accessory.

This integration would utilise Apple’s developer framework known as AccessorySetupKit, which allows developers to request a single permission grant. Once the user consents to this initial permission, the feature would enable seamless copying and pasting of text, links, and supported media in the background without prompting for repeated permissions.

While the functionality offers promising advancements, the implementation timeline suggests that users will need to be patient. Apple has indicated that this cross-device copy-paste feature represents a significant technical challenge, with engineering efforts expected to conclude by late 2027. Following the completion of developer testing, a public rollout may extend into early 2028.

Upcoming iPhone Releases and Market Context

In the meantime, Apple is preparing to introduce its iPhone 18 Pro series in September 2026. The tech giant from Cupertino plans to unveil three flagship models this year: the iPhone 18 Pro, the iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the iPhone 18 Ultra. Furthermore, the standard iPhone 18, iPhone 18e, and iPhone Air 2 are slated for release the following year.

The current climate in the tech industry, characterised by a memory crisis, may lead to increased prices for the upcoming iPhone models compared to their predecessors. Consumers could see a rise in costs due to these ongoing challenges in the supply chain.
