The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) recently organised a substantial protest in Mumbai against Harshvardhan Sapkal, the Maharashtra Congress State President, following his alleged derogatory remarks regarding Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar. The demonstration occurred on August 5, near the Congress headquarters at Tilak Bhavan, where numerous NCP members gathered to express their discontent with Sapkal’s comments.

The political tensions in Maharashtra escalated as representatives from both parties exchanged sharp criticisms. The NCP has called for a public apology from Sapkal, labelling his remarks as unacceptable, while Sapkal has dismissed the allegations, labelling them an attempt to divert attention from his party’s dwindling prominence.

Reactions from Political Leaders

Sunetra Pawar responded to the claims of being referred to as a “gungi gudiya,” which translates to “mute doll,” stating she would address the issue at a suitable moment. Her stance has added to the prevailing discontent, as she is not only the Deputy Chief Minister but also the first woman to hold this position in Maharashtra.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has also condemned the remarks from the Congress party, accusing them of descending to a new low for publicity. Fadnavis remarked that such statements reflect poorly on the Congress’s credibility and that they are drawing unnecessary attention to themselves.

NCP MLA Sana Malik highlighted the irony in the Congress’s actions, recalling similar derogatory comments made about former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. She expressed disappointment that the Congress, which historically opposed such remarks, seems to have deviated from its core principles. Malik also declared the need for clarification from the Congress’s central leadership regarding their stance on the matter.

Demands and Future Actions from NCP

The NCP has articulated an urgent request for a public apology from Congress leadership, expressing concern over the implications of such comments on political discourse. Malik warned that if a satisfactory response is not forthcoming, the NCP would consider amplifying their protests on a national scale and exploring legal remedies against the remarks.

Harshvardhan Sapkal defended his position, asserting that he did not employ any offensive language and suggested that the NCP is attempting to create controversy to remain relevant in the political landscape. He indicated that the remarks have been misinterpreted and that there was no intention to insult anyone involved.

Furthermore, Sapkal indicated that an apology is unwarranted since he believes no insult was intended. He mentioned prior cordial exchanges between Pawar and himself during election nominations, suggesting that the incident is a distortion of genuine political dialogue and should not detract from constructive political engagement.
