Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, a Member of Parliament from the Congress party, has raised concerns about Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s presence in the Parliament during the final day of the Monsoon Session. She remarked that his appearance seemed solely aimed at singing the national song ‘Vande Mataram’. This statement emerged amidst a day marked by persistent protests from opposition parties.

On August 13, both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha were adjourned sine die, signalling the conclusion of the Monsoon Session, which was marred by various disruptions. Gandhi expressed her discontent with the lack of engagement from key government officials throughout the session. She questioned the functioning of democracy and Parliament when neither the Prime Minister nor the Home Minister had participated actively.

Opposition Calls for Government Accountability

The opposition parties, including Congress, have been vocal in demanding accountability from the government regarding its strategies, particularly the police actions against students protesting in Delhi. Despite repeated calls for discussion, government representatives maintained that these matters could still be addressed within Parliament’s framework. Opposition members have highlighted that their queries have largely gone unanswered during this session.

Sanjay Yadav, a Member of Parliament representing the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), further alleged that the government’s reluctance to engage in meaningful dialogue had led to a significant waste of both Parliament’s time and taxpayers’ money. He claimed that this lack of dialogue has led to essential legislation being passed without thorough examination and debate.

Yadav characterised the government’s attitude as one of “obstinacy” and “arrogance”, arguing that such behaviour not only undermined the parliamentary process but also disrespected the democratic principles that govern the nation. He asserted that citizens were effectively losing out due to what he termed as a reckless disregard for legislative procedures.

Parliament’s Atmosphere and Ongoing Tensions

During the session, tensions escalated as members of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition coalition, INDIA, engaged in heated counter-protests. This atmosphere of unrest highlights the growing divides within Parliament, reflecting deeper political rifts in the context of the current government’s functioning.

Furthermore, amid the disruptions, Yadav emphasised that a staggering sum of Rs 2.5 lakh was reportedly being wasted per minute, accumulating to an average financial loss of around Rs 9 crore daily. Such figures underscore the broader implications of inefficiency in legislative processes and raise questions regarding the management of public funds.

The session’s conclusion comes at a time when public dissatisfaction is reportedly rising, partly attributed to the legislative process being likened to the rapid preparation of “instant noodles”, with bills passing in a matter of minutes without adequate debate. Yadav’s comments suggest a growing perception that important policy matters are being treated with insufficient scrutiny, which he insists is an affront to the electorate who place their trust in their representatives.
