The Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, Pushkar Singh Dhami, has reached out to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, requesting immediate action for the safe return of Indramani Nautiyal, a resident of Tehri Garhwal, who is allegedly in a precarious situation in Saudi Arabia. This communication underscores the urgency of securing Nautiyal’s release and safety.

In a statement from the Chief Minister’s office, it was highlighted that Dhami has solicited the intervention of the Indian government at all necessary levels to facilitate Nautiyal’s release and ensure he receives legal and financial support. The focus is also on his safe return to India as soon as possible.

Background of the Case

Indramani Nautiyal, the son of Devi Ram Nautiyal, hails from Gaursada village in the Jaunpur block of Tehri Garhwal district. He moved to Saudi Arabia in 2018 in search of employment opportunities, working as a truck driver for Pick Roads and Contracting Company based in Riyadh. His employment encountered serious complications following a significant road accident in 2018.

Subsequent judicial proceedings led to Nautiyal being sentenced to one year in prison, while the owner of the company faced a fine of 9 lakh Saudi Riyals, approximately ₹2.29 crore. Reports indicate that despite the time elapsed since the incident, the company owner has yet to settle this financial penalty.

Nautiyal’s current circumstances are severe, as he is reportedly being held in a hostage-like situation, with pressure being exerted on him to pay the outstanding fine. His family, particularly his wife and daughter, have endeavoured through various channels to secure his return to India but to no avail. The ongoing situation has resulted in significant mental and financial strain on his family.

Appeal for Humanitarian Intervention

In his appeal to the External Affairs Minister, CM Dhami detailed the plight of Nautiyal and urged for the involvement of the appropriate authorities to expedite his release. He requested that the necessary legal and financial assistance be provided to ensure Nautiyal’s safe repatriation back to India.

CM Dhami expressed the commitment of the Uttarakhand state government to assist residents who encounter difficult situations abroad. He articulated hope that the central government and the Ministry of External Affairs would approach the issue with a humanitarian perspective, facilitating a timely resolution that would restore Nautiyal’s freedom and reunite him with his family.

An emphasis was placed on the importance of governmental support in such cases, as it can significantly impact the well-being and safety of Indian citizens working overseas. The Chief Minister’s proactive stance indicates a strong advocacy for the rights and safety of Uttarakhand residents abroad.
