Congress MP Tariq Anwar has expressed his discontent regarding Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s alleged failure to attend parliamentary sessions. He highlighted that Shah missed a crucial opportunity to address significant questions related to the NEET-UG paper leak incident during the ongoing monsoon session. Anwar made these statements during an interview with ANI on August 13, emphasising the importance of participating in democratic processes.

According to Anwar, both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha serve as paramount platforms for discourse in a democratic government. He remarked on the missed opportunities by Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to engage with pressing issues, particularly concerning the NEET controversy. Anwar underscored that the opposition had anticipated their presence for nearly twenty days, only to be disappointed by their absence.

Moreover, Anwar questioned the implications of repeated disregard by government ministers toward parliamentary responsibilities. He asserted that parliamentary deliberations are essential to democracy, and such absences raise concerns about the ministers’ commitment to addressing matters of public interest.

Additional Criticism From CPI(M) MP Amra Ram

CPI(M) MP Amra Ram similarly condemned Amit Shah’s alleged lack of participation in parliamentary affairs. He accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of neglecting issues affecting the public. In his remarks to ANI, Ram highlighted the protests at Jantar Mantar related to the NEET-UG issue, claiming that the government has failed to provide adequate responses and solutions.

Ram also pointed out the violent measures allegedly employed against protestors, including the use of pellet and stun guns. He expressed his frustration at what he sees as the government’s focus on theatrics rather than meaningful dialogue and debate. Drawing from his extensive life experience, Ram stated that he had never witnessed bills being passed in Parliament without thorough discussions, a practice he claims has become common under the Modi administration.

His comments reflect broader concerns over the erosion of democratic processes, where significant legislative matters are reportedly being decided without adequate debate or consultation with opposition members.

Parliamentary Proceedings Disrupted Amid Tensions

The controversy surrounding Amit Shah’s absence unfolded as both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were adjourned sine die on the same day. This resulted in what many observers termed a parliamentary washout, primarily due to aggressive chanting and counter-protests from both the ruling BJP and the Opposition INDIA bloc. Such disruptions have characterised this Monsoon Session, making it challenging to progress on essential legislative matters.

The BJP’s protest centered on demands for acknowledgment from Congress regarding ongoing protests in Jharkhand, escalating tensions further. In a notable incident, opposition MPs led by Congress member Pawan Khera displayed a toy monkey while chanting slogans directed at the Prime Minister, signalling escalating rivalries within the parliament.

As clashes continued, both factions remained entrenched in their respective positions, leading to significant disruptions. The current political atmosphere reflects persistent tensions over crucial legislative and economic issues, underscoring the ongoing strife between the ruling party and the opposition.
