UP Governor Directs Medical Colleges to Set Up Religious Conversion Prevention Cells

Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel has directed all medical and dental colleges in the state to establish dedicated ‘Dharmantaran Roktham Cells’ (Religious Conversion Prevention Cells) as part of a broader mechanism aimed at preventing alleged religious conversion activities on campuses.

Providing details of the implementation process, Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical University Vice Chancellor Major General Amit Devgan said the university had issued detailed instructions to all affiliated medical and nursing institutions regarding the measures to be adopted.

“We have received clear instructions from the authorities outlining specific measures. We have directed our medical and nursing colleges on how to implement these measures to prevent such conversions,” Devgan told ANI.

He said the guidelines prescribe a multi-layered approach and emphasise greater interaction between faculty members and students through the existing mentor-mentee system.

Mentor-Mentee System To Play Key Role

According to Devgan, colleges have been instructed to discuss the issue during regular mentor-mentee meetings and strengthen communication channels with parents and guardians.

The guidelines call for increased vigilance and periodic updates to families through Parent-Teacher Association forums. Parents have also been encouraged to sensitise students regarding possible risks and influences.

Educational institutions have been directed to monitor activities within campuses and hostels more closely as part of the preventive mechanism.

Strict Monitoring Of Hostel Visitors

The Vice Chancellor said special attention would be paid to the movement of visitors inside hostel premises.

Colleges have been asked to maintain strict oversight in order to identify and restrict individuals who may attempt to influence or mislead students.

He added that any involvement in such activities would invite immediate legal action.

To enhance awareness, institutions have also been instructed to organise sensitisation programmes and meetings for students.

Committees To Review Implementation

Devgan said colleges would constitute committees to implement the guidelines issued by the university and provide regular feedback on the steps taken.

“We will seek feedback from them regarding the work done,” he said.

The development comes weeks after allegations regarding the religious conversion of a minor boy from Bijnor in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara sparked political reactions.

Responding to the incident in May, Uttar Pradesh Minister Dharmveer Prajapati had said repeated attempts were being made to tarnish the image of the state government. He also stated that PM Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had directed investigative agencies to deal with such cases with full authority.

The latest directive from the Governor’s office is expected to be implemented across medical, dental and nursing institutions affiliated with Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical University.
