Babar Azam’s ascent to the top 10 of the ICC Men’s Test batting rankings marks a significant milestone in his career as Pakistan’s cricket captain. Climbing five positions to reach the tenth spot, this achievement follows a successful series in the West Indies earlier this month. The talented batsman was reinstated as the Test captain in July, taking over from Shan Masood, as Pakistan embarks on a new chapter under his leadership.

During the series in the Caribbean, Babar managed to score two fifties across four innings, which contributed to Pakistan’s performance that culminated in a 1-1 draw against the West Indies. His leadership during this period has been commendable, although the resurgence has not come without its challenges.

The first Test in Tarouba saw Pakistan suffer a 90-run defeat, despite Babar’s unbeaten score of 58 in the second innings. This loss extended the team’s streak of away Test defeats to eight. However, Babar’s resolve was evident as he led the team to a vital victory in the second Test held in Port of Spain.

Performance in Recent Series

In the second Test match, Babar scored 88 runs in the first innings and contributed 24 runs in a well-executed run chase, resulting in an eight-wicket victory for Pakistan. This win was particularly noteworthy, as it ended a wait of over three years for Pakistan to secure a Test victory outside their home ground.

This performance not only reinstated Babar in the top 10 rankings for the first time since September 2024 but also highlighted his potential to lead the team back to glory. Following a prolonged stretch of poor form in Test cricket, his resurgence is both timely and significant as Pakistan prepares for upcoming fixtures against strong opponents like England.

In addition to Babar, Abdullah Shafique emerged as a notable performer from the Pakistan camp, climbing 25 places to secure the 32nd position in the batting rankings after scoring an unbeaten 160 in the second Test. Sajid Khan also made advances, rising five places to stand at 30th among Test bowlers and 32nd among all-rounders.

Top Rankings in ICC Test Batting

The current ICC Test batting rankings are led by Travis Head of Australia, who holds 853 rating points, followed closely by England’s Harry Brook with 852 points. Joe Root occupies the third position with 840 points, while Steve Smith sits fourth with 831 points. Temba Bavuma, the South African captain, is fifth with 775 points. Sri Lanka’s Kamindu Mendis and India’s Shubman Gill follow in the sixth and seventh spots with 744 and 743 points, respectively.

Rachin Ravindra of New Zealand ranks eighth with 740 points, while Yashasvi Jaiswal of India is ninth with 733 points. Babar Azam finds himself in the tenth position with a total of 716 points, making him one of two players from Pakistan within the top ten, alongside India, which has two representatives among the top nine.

For Babar, this return to form is not merely about individual accolades; it presents an opportunity to translate personal consistency into a broader success for Pakistan’s red-ball cricket.
