Two individuals have lost their lives, and eight others have sustained injuries following a fire that erupted on the 11th floor of a building located on Church Road in Mumbai. The incident occurred on the night of August 11, reportedly starting at around 10:02 pm at the Shanta Bhavan Building, situated in proximity to St. Xavier’s School in Vile Parle (West). Firefighters responded promptly to the emergency call, with eight fire tenders dispatched to the scene.

The incendiary spread was attributed to various factors, including the building’s electrical wiring, installations, air conditioning unit, and household items like furniture and kitchen utensils. The area impacted by the blaze spans approximately 4,000 square feet, leading to extensive damage within the structure.

Fire Officer V Bhosale confirmed that rescue operations were executed efficiently, with 15 people reported to have been trapped and subsequently saved from the building’s terrace. Unfortunately, fatalities included a woman and a child.

Casualties and Medical Response

The deceased have been identified as a child named Abir, aged two and a half years, and a 23-year-old woman named Ankita. Among the eight injured, four individuals have been named as Parth, Hiren, Yashasvi, and Abishek. According to medical reports, all four are currently in stable condition, recovering after receiving treatment for their injuries.

The rescue teams deployed to the building reported that the fire has now been contained and cooling operations have commenced. Although the situation is under control, the exact cause of the fire remains undetermined. The Fire Department has indicated that a detailed investigation will take place to establish the underlying reason for the outbreak.

Bhosale provided further updates regarding the incident, stating, “The fire broke out on the 11th floor of the building. It has been brought under control. Eight fire tenders are at the scene… the situation is currently under control, and cooling operations are underway.”

Previous Fire Incident in Mumbai

This recent fire is not an isolated incident in Mumbai. Just days prior, another fire broke out at the Byculla Police Station on August 10. This incident originated on the first floor of the facility late at night and was quickly contained within surrounding rooms. Thankfully, no fatalities or significant property damage were reported during that event, as the fire was classified as a Level 1 incident by officials.

The spate of incidents has raised concerns regarding fire safety measures in urban areas, particularly in high-rise buildings. Fire safety protocols and emergency preparedness are under increasing scrutiny. Various city departments, including the Mumbai Fire Brigade and BMC, are expected to reassess safety measures in public and residential buildings following these recent events.
