Tata Consultancy Services HR Row: Woman Alleges Pressure to Stay Silent on Harassment

The CSR Journal Magazine

The HR manager at the Tata Consultancy Services’ Nashik BPO unit allegedly discouraged a woman from lodging a complaint regarding harassment and conversion attempts, stating that “these things happen.” This discouragement occurred in the context of a broader case involving multiple accusations against male employees at the facility.

Nashik Police Commissioner Sandeep Karnik elaborated that the operations and HR head allegedly sided with the accused, aiming to dissuade the victim from pursuing her case. This revelation has intensified scrutiny over the management’s handling of the harassment allegations.

Current investigations have identified seven male suspects believed to have coordinated their actions to target female staff members. Officials have filed nine separate cases related to these allegations, and arrests have been made involving eight individuals—seven men and one woman, with another female suspect reportedly still at large.

Ongoing Investigations and Arrests

Authorities have taken significant steps, including the arrest of the female operations manager, who has been placed in judicial custody until April 28. The police are actively pursuing inquiries, gathering evidence from various sources, including the Special Investigation Team, Anti-Terrorism Squad, and National Investigation Agency, to explore any potential links to larger networks.

Among the nine cases filed, one complaint from a male employee alleges both attempted religious conversion and harassment at the workplace. The formation of a special investigation team followed initial reports from eight female employees detailing experiences of mental and sexual harassment, highlighting potential negligence from HR in addressing these complaints.

The male suspects connected to the case have been identified as Danish Sheikh, Tausif Attar, Raza Memon, Shahrukh Qureshi, Shafi Sheikh, Asif Aftab Ansar, and Shahrukh Sheikh. Authorities assert that a pattern of coordinated harassment has emerged, implicating several employees in these serious charges.

Company Response and Measures Taken

Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran expressed his concerns over the allegations, labelling them as “gravely concerning and distressing.” He confirmed that Chief Operating Officer Arathi Subramanian is overseeing a comprehensive investigation to ascertain the facts of the situation and identify those responsible for misconduct.

According to Commissioner Karnik, the accused individuals, which include both male and female employees, reportedly exploited their authoritative roles to harass their colleagues. The complicity of male employees appears to be prevalent in broader harassment patterns observed within the organisation, suggesting a troubling atmosphere.

One of the female suspects has been linked to a specific case of religious harassment, while the HR head’s actions in undermining the victim’s attempts to report her experiences have drawn significant attention. In light of the disturbing allegations, police have deployed female officers to conduct inquiries at the workplace, leading to additional victims stepping forward during counselling sessions.
