Sharad Pawar Shuts Down Speculation: “NCP is United”

The CSR Journal Magazine

Sharad Pawar, the leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), has assured that there will be no division within his party. During a press conference held in Baramati, Maharashtra, on June 25, he expressed confidence in the unity and loyalty of NCP members, particularly in light of recent events affecting their political peers in Shiv Sena (UBT). He stated unequivocally, “Shiv Sena UBT MPs have split, none of our MPs will split,” emphasising the strength of the NCP’s internal cohesion.

The comments were made in reaction to ongoing speculations suggesting that some NCP Members of Parliament (MPs) and Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) were in communication with rival factions. This speculation follows a period of turmoil within the Shiv Sena (UBT), which has reportedly seen multiple MPs switch allegiance to the faction led by Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister, Eknath Shinde.

Pawar’s remarks serve to reaffirm the party’s stability as it navigates a changing political landscape in Maharashtra. The NCP leader remains optimistic that the loyalty of his MPs will not waver as rival factions attempt to sway them.

Shiv Sena (UBT) Faces Internal Challenges

The situation within Shiv Sena (UBT) has become increasingly complex following the departure of six of its MPs, who formally joined the rival Shiv Sena faction on June 22. The MPs in question include Sanjay Haribhau Jadhav, Sanjay Dina Patil, Sanjay Uttamrao Deshmukh, Bhausaheb Rajaram Wakchaure, Omprakash Bhupalsingh Nimbalkar, and Nagesh Bapurao Patil Ashtikar. This shift highlights significant fractures within the party’s ranks.

One of the MPs, Arvind Sawant, took steps to engage with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, seeking explicit opportunities to present the concerns of their faction before any decisions were made regarding the departing members. Sawant articulated the need for due process, mentioning a letter previously sent to the Speaker, requesting that no final actions be undertaken without their input.

“We expect that if any individual or MP approaches you about leaving, you should protect the Constitution,” Sawant conveyed to reporters. The request focuses on ensuring that all voices are heard in the decision-making process, reflecting the desire for accountability within parliamentary procedures.

Eknath Shinde’s Statements on Party Development

Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, following the induction of the six MPs into his faction, proclaimed the successful completion of what he termed “Operation Tiger.” He characterised this transition as not merely a tactical move but as alignment with constitutional principles aimed at promoting development in their constituencies.

Speaking at a press conference, Shinde asserted that the newly inducted MPs are motivated by a dedication to constituency development rather than personal ambitions. He reaffirmed his commitment to the ideological foundations of the Shiv Sena established by its founders, Balasaheb Thackeray and Anand Dighe. He referred to this recruitment as part of a larger movement initiated in 2022, when significant numbers of MLAs also joined his faction.

In the context of current political manoeuvring, the Deputy Chief Minister expressed that the actions taken by the MPs were essential for preserving the essence of the original Shiv Sena. This ongoing dynamic illustrates the challenges faced by party leadership in Maharashtra as they navigate internal dissent and external pressures within the wider political framework.
