The Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, has authorised a substantial 78 per cent increase in monthly salaries for contract and Job Trainee Medical Officers (Specialists). This historic decision raises their monthly salary from Rs. 33,660 to Rs. 60,000, marking a pivotal moment in the state’s healthcare policy.

Previous adjustments had been made in 2022, when the remuneration for these positions was raised by approximately 24 per cent following the recommendations of the Sixth Pay Commission. This earlier increase brought their salary from around Rs. 27,000 to Rs. 33,660.

The recent hike is anticipated to enhance the appeal of government positions for specialist doctors, ensuring the provision of quality healthcare services, particularly in remote parts of the state.

Government’s Commitment to Healthcare

Under Chief Minister Sukhu’s leadership, the state government is making concerted efforts to bolster the healthcare sector. By improving salaries and stipends, the administration aims to ensure better healthcare access for residents, thereby reducing the necessity for them to seek medical treatment outside the state.

In line with this commitment, the government has previously increased the monthly stipends for postgraduate medical students enrolled in government medical colleges. For instance, first-year students saw an increase from Rs. 40,000 to Rs. 50,000, second-year students from Rs. 45,000 to Rs. 60,000, and third-year students from Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 65,000.

Such adjustments are intended to recognise the crucial role that postgraduate medical students play in patient care while they advance their studies. The state government aims to motivate these students to contribute positively to healthcare services.

Enhancements for Senior Residents and Specialists

In addition to the salary hikes for contract and Job Trainee Medical Officers, there have also been significant increases in the stipends for Senior Residents and other specialists associated with medical colleges. The stipends for these professionals have been raised by 50 per cent to 170 per cent, significantly improving their compensation.

Specifically, the monthly stipends for Senior Residents and Tutor Specialists have risen from the range of Rs. 60,000 to Rs. 65,000, reaching Rs. 1,00,000. Similarly, stipends for Super Specialists and Senior Residents (Super Specialists) have been adjusted from Rs. 60,000 to Rs. 65,000, now amounting to Rs. 1,30,000.

The Chief Minister has reiterated the importance of healthcare and education within the state’s governance framework. Over the past three and a half years, various measures have been taken to implement comprehensive reforms aimed at improving these critical sectors.

By increasing the salaries of Contract and Job Trainee Medical Officers (Specialists), the government aims to further enhance healthcare services and provide improved medical facilities for the populace. The Chief Minister expressed confidence that these strategic initiatives would ensure residents gain access to high-quality healthcare services closer to their homes.
