The CSR Journal Magazine

A woman preparing for the National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) in Mahoba, Uttar Pradesh, was reportedly kidnapped and held captive for a duration of 16 days. The incident occurred on April 30, when the victim was returning home from her regular coaching sessions. She was allegedly abducted by a group of men, including named suspects Mohit Srivastava, Ankit Srivastava, and Allu Rajput, who arrived in a car.

According to reports, the perpetrators administered sedative injections to the woman inside the vehicle and subjected her to sexual assault. They were also said to have taken explicit photographs and videos of her during her captivity. The horrifying treatment the victim endured included being branded with lit cigarettes and inflicted with knife wounds.

Forced Marriage Attempt and Threats

On May 13, the victim was allegedly transported to Prayagraj, where she encountered several relatives of Mohit, along with another individual named Bhanwa Rajput. This group attempted to coerce her into marrying Mohit. When she resisted, they reportedly threatened her by displaying a photograph of her brother, suggesting they would harm him if she did not comply.

The threats escalated, with the group asserting that her agreement to the marriage would lead to the deletion of the explicit photographs and videos taken during her captivity. Such intimidation tactics were aimed to instill fear and force compliance on her part.

The woman’s horrifying experience was further compounded by repeated sexual assaults committed by Mohit during the 16 days she was held captive.

Police Reaction and Rescue Operation

Following the report from the woman’s mother, who lodged a missing persons complaint on May 1, local authorities took immediate action. The police registered a case and assembled four dedicated teams to locate the missing individual. Their investigation lasted two weeks, culminating in the woman’s recovery from Prayagraj on May 16.

In a statement regarding the rescue operation, Vandana Singh, a senior police official, confirmed that three suspects had been apprehended for questioning and would soon be presented in court. She also indicated that special teams were actively conducting further search operations to locate remaining accomplices.

The police response aimed to address not only the immediate safety of the survivor but also to hold the perpetrators accountable for their alleged crimes. Efforts were intensified to ensure justice for the victim and prevent such incidents in the future.

Political Reactions and Public Outcry

The abduction and assault of the NEET aspirant has sparked significant public outrage and drawn attention from political parties in Uttar Pradesh. The Congress party has openly criticised the state government, highlighting concerns regarding safety and security for women in the region.

Ajay Rai, the President of UP Congress, reportedly reached out to the survivor to offer support. A delegation from the party plans to visit her soon to provide assistance and address her needs following her traumatic experience.

The public response reflects a growing concern regarding the rising incidents of violence and the perceived inadequacies in the government’s handling of such cases. The incident underscores the urgent need for improved safety measures for women and accountability for those who perpetrate violence against them.
