President Droupadi Murmu has called on Moldovan businesses to explore investment opportunities in India, saying New Delhi is seeking partnerships “built on trust” and “shared prosperity” as the two countries look to deepen economic and strategic cooperation.

During her state visit to Moldova, President Murmu addressed the India-Moldova Business Forum alongside Moldovan President Maia Sandu, met members of the Indian community, attended a state banquet in her honour and held discussions aimed at strengthening bilateral ties. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the visit marked another step in expanding India’s engagement with Europe.

President Invites Businesses to Explore Investment Opportunities

Addressing the India-Moldova Business Forum in Chisinau on July 20, President Murmu said India and Moldova have shared “warm and friendly” relations since establishing diplomatic ties in 1992.

“Our partnership is based on mutual respect, democratic values and a shared commitment to peace, development and international cooperation,” she said, according to an MEA statement.

Referring to India’s long-term development goals, Murmu said, “As India advances towards its vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, we seek partnerships built on trust and shared prosperity.”

She highlighted India’s position as one of the world’s fastest-growing major economies, driven by entrepreneurship, digital transformation, manufacturing and a skilled workforce. Murmu said Moldova’s reform-oriented outlook, strategic location, talented workforce and growing integration with European markets make it an attractive destination for Indian businesses.

Focus on Technology, Renewable Energy and Trade

The President said there was significant scope for collaboration in sectors including digital technologies, artificial intelligence, cyber security, fintech, digital public infrastructure, renewable energy, advanced manufacturing, agriculture, food processing, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology and healthcare.

She noted that Indian companies are keen to participate in Moldova’s renewable energy projects, including solar power, battery storage, smart grids, green hydrogen and other clean technologies.

Murmu also encouraged Moldovan companies to invest in India, saying the country offers “good business opportunities” for trade and investment.

“We remain committed to fostering a transparent, predictable and investor-friendly business environment,” she said, inviting Moldovan businesses to explore opportunities in India. She also urged Indian companies to expand their presence in Moldova, expressing confidence that discussions at the Business Forum would lead to new commercial partnerships and stronger economic cooperation.

The forum brought together business representatives from both countries across sectors such as agriculture, food processing, information technology, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, renewable energy, education, logistics and digital technologies.

Community Engagement and State Honours

During her visit, President Murmu attended a banquet hosted in her honour by Moldovan President Maia Sandu before departing for North Macedonia.

She also interacted with members of the Indian community, including students, in Chisinau. According to MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, the President appreciated their contribution to strengthening the friendship between India and Moldova.

India Describes Moldova as Strategic Partner

Ahead of the conclusion of the visit, the MEA described Moldova as an important strategic partner in India’s growing engagement with Europe.

During a special briefing, Secretary (West) Sibi George said President Murmu’s visit had opened a “new and promising chapter” in bilateral relations and reaffirmed the shared commitment of both countries to build a broader partnership rooted in democratic values, mutual respect, peace and prosperity.

George highlighted the presence of around 2,000 Indian medical students in Moldova, describing them as a vital bridge between the two societies. He said the growing number of Indians travelling to the region has increased the demand for greater connectivity between the two countries.

The two sides also discussed cooperation on global issues, including renewable energy, climate resilience and multilateral reforms. President Murmu invited Moldova to join India’s flagship initiatives, including the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) and the Global Biofuels Alliance.

According to the MEA, both countries also exchanged views on reforms of multilateral institutions, particularly the United Nations, and reaffirmed the importance of combating global terrorism.

In a symbolic gesture during the visit, President Murmu presented a bust of Mahatma Gandhi to President Sandu. Secretary George said the gift would stand as “an enduring symbol of the universal relevance of Mahatma Gandhi’s message.”

Concluding the visit, the MEA said President Murmu’s engagements reflected the growing importance of parliamentary democracy and people-to-people ties in strengthening India-Moldova relations, while reaffirming both countries’ commitment to expanding cooperation across political, economic and strategic sectors.
