Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk is currently under medical supervision at Vardhman Mahavir Medical College (VMMC) and Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi. According to official reports, his condition is stable. The health bulletin issued on Monday confirmed that his vital signs are within acceptable limits.

Although Wangchuk’s blood sugar levels have been recorded on the lower side, other blood parameters are reportedly improving due to oral rehydration therapy (ORS) and potassium syrup supplementation. Medical professionals indicated that a multidisciplinary team, including specialists from both the hospital and AIIMS New Delhi, is meticulously observing his health status.

Doctors emphasised the importance of continuous clinical observation to aid his recovery from mild to moderate dehydration. This ongoing monitoring aims to identify any potential complications early on. Hospital authorities confirmed that all necessary medical interventions are being provided.

Details of Wangchuk’s Condition and Treatment

The comprehensive health update was provided by the Head of the Department of Medicine at VMMC and Safdarjung Hospital. Wangchuk was admitted to the hospital on July 18 following a hunger strike at Jantar Mantar, where he was advocating for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan in connection with the NEET exam paper leak.

Medical staff are closely tracking Wangchuk’s recovery progress, with decisions regarding any further treatment to be based on his clinical response and the outcomes of current laboratory tests. The medical team aims to ensure that Wangchuk receives the best possible care during this critical period.

Wangchuk’s health status has attracted considerable public interest, especially in light of his activism for educational reforms and accountability concerning the NEET controversy.

Ongoing Protests and Political Developments

Amidst Wangchuk’s hospitalisation, a delegation from the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) recently met with the Union Health Minister to discuss their demands. The minister urged the protesters to cease their sit-in. Notably, JP Nadda, who serves as the Leader of the House in the Rajya Sabha, reported that a proposal from the protesters to engage in dialogue with the government was made this morning.

Discussions initiated around 11:50 am in a cordial atmosphere, with a detailed verbal exchange preceding a written petition presented around 4 pm. Nadda requested the protesters to conclude their demonstration and assist in restoring normalcy.

Saurav Das, the chief spokesperson for CJP, confirmed that three demands were articulated during the meeting. These include the immediate release of Sonam Wangchuk, the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, and compensation of Rs 1 crore for the families of NEET aspirants, over 20 of whom are reported to have lost their lives.

Das reiterated that the protests would persist until their conditions are addressed. He highlighted that the meeting with Nadda marked a pivotal moment for the activists, showcasing their determination to secure accountability in the wake of recent events surrounding the NEET examination.
