NDRF and SDRF teams have arrived at the site where a Bailey bridge was destroyed due to a sudden increase in water flow at Tamak Nala on the Jyotirmath-Malari motor road in Chamoli district, Uttarakhand. This rapid surge occurred on August 11, prompting immediate action from local authorities. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami swiftly recognised the gravity of the situation and instructed the administration to prioritise relief and rescue efforts.

Search and rescue operations are currently underway at the location, where the bridge, constructed by the 123 BRTF, Suraithota, was completely washed away. The excessive flow of water in the stream not only obliterated the bridge but also allegedly swept away one person and a vehicle, reported to be a camper. In light of this incident, vehicular traffic on the Jyotirmath-Malari motor road has been halted as a safety measure.

Residents in the vicinity are being advised to steer clear of the affected area and refrain from travelling on the route until conditions improve. The Chief Minister has mandated authorities to implement precautionary measures in downstream regions to ensure the safety of individuals residing in at-risk locations.

Precautionary Measures Recommended by Chief Minister

Chief Minister Dhami has issued directives to relocate residents to safer areas when necessary, and to maintain continuous monitoring of rivers, streams, and regions that could be susceptible to sudden rises in water flow. These measures are designed to maximise safety and mitigate potential hazards for those living in vulnerable areas.

In addition, the Chief Minister emphasised the need to maintain the uninterrupted supply of essential goods, including rations, food, and medicines, to nearby villages affected by the bridge collapse. If needed, alternative routes should be utilised for the transportation of these critical supplies.

Vinod Kumar Suman, the Secretary of Disaster Management and Rehabilitation, reported that the State Emergency Operations Centre is engaged in continuous monitoring of Chamoli and surrounding susceptible locations throughout Uttarakhand. Cooperation is being established with district administrations and relevant departments to activate relief and rescue teams as necessary, ensuring swift action can be taken in response to further developments.

Monitoring and Future Precautions Against Rising Water Levels

In light of the increasing water levels in local rivers and streams, special caution is enforced in low-lying and riverbank areas. The Secretary of Disaster Management reiterated the importance of localised assessments to take proper precautionary measures. This ensures that people’s safety is at the forefront amid the potential for further water surges.
