The CSR Journal Magazine

A tragic accident occurred involving a Bolero vehicle that fell approximately 250 metres into a gorge on the Pauri-Devprayag motor road in Uttarakhand’s Pauri district. Reports indicate that the incident took place near Sabdarkhal, close to Kunddhar, as the vehicle was making its way from Devprayag to Pauri. Eyewitnesses suggest that the vehicle lost control before veering off the road and plunging down the gorge.

Rescue Operations Underway

Following the crash, local residents quickly responded to the scene and notified the police about the incident. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Pauri, Sarvesh Panwar, confirmed that both the Devprayag Police and teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) arrived promptly at the site to coordinate rescue efforts. Emergency teams were tasked with locating and extracting the occupants of the vehicle.

The Bolero was carrying six individuals at the time of the accident. Unfortunately, five passengers lost their lives while one survivor was successfully rescued from the gorge. The survivor, identified as Armaan, hails from Haridwar and was subsequently transported to the Base Hospital in Srinagar, Uttarakhand, for medical attention. Authorities used specialised equipment to retrieve him safely from the scene.

The deceased individuals have been named as Afzal (49), his wife Shabbo (40), their three-year-old daughter, their fourteen-year-old son, and Gufran (34), who is also related to the family. All victims were reported to reside in Raipur Jeetpur, under Laksar Kotwali police jurisdiction in Haridwar district.

Legal and Investigative Proceedings

Emergency responders, along with local volunteers, worked diligently to recover the bodies from the gorge and facilitate their transfer for post-mortem examination. Authorities are completing the necessary legal formalities before handing the remains over to the grieving families. Investigative procedures are ongoing to clarify the precise cause of the accident.

Preliminary assessments by police suggest that the Bolero went out of control before the plunge. However, the investigation is still in its early stages, and further details regarding the circumstances surrounding the crash will be gathered. The insights gained from this incident will be crucial in understanding what led to this tragic event.

This incident brings attention to the dangers associated with the mountainous roads in Uttarakhand. The region’s deep gorges and winding paths often complicate rescue operations, underscoring the need for increased safety measures. Authorities have reiterated the necessity for drivers to exercise heightened caution while navigating these roads, especially during the monsoon season when conditions can deteriorate quickly.
