Mumbai Local Train Murder Victim’s Family Seeks Death Penalty

The CSR Journal Magazine

The family of 22-year-old Mayank Lohar, who was fatally stabbed inside a local Mumbai train, has called for the death penalty for the alleged perpetrator. The incident occurred following a disagreement among passengers regarding whether the train doors should remain open during heavy rainfall. Mayank was attacked after the argument escalated inside the first-class compartment of a fast train travelling between Andheri and Borivali stations around 10.50 pm on Tuesday.

Following the attack, CCTV footage revealed the accused, identified as 30-year-old Sachin Ramesh Suvarna, holding a blood-soaked knife while Mayank lay motionless in the compartment. Railway officials, alongside personnel from the Government Railway Police (GRP) and Railway Protection Force (RPF), reached the scene shortly after the train arrived at Borivali station, where emergency medical assistance was provided. Despite efforts to save him, Mayank was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The murder has ignited public outrage regarding safety measures on Mumbai’s suburban rail network, with Mayank’s sibling emphasising the requirement for severe penalties as a form of justice. “We want justice. The punishment should be the death penalty,” stated his sister amidst the family’s mourning.

Police Investigation and Arrest of the Accused

The rapid response from law enforcement led to the formation of seven special investigation teams tasked with locating the suspect. Authorities conducted a comprehensive review of footage from over 400 CCTV cameras positioned at various railway stations, including Borivali, Andheri, Mira Road, and Nallasopara. This exhaustive investigation enabled police to identify Suvarna, who reportedly resides in Mira Road East.

Officers apprehended Suvarna in the Panvel area of Navi Mumbai on Wednesday, less than 24 hours after the incident. The police reported that the suspect had expressed fear of arrest and allegedly attempted to flee the city after confiding in his father about his involvement in the altercation.

The investigation also aimed at recovering the murder weapon, which is still unaccounted for as interrogations of the suspect continue. The urgency surrounding this case reflects ongoing public concern regarding passenger safety on the railway network.

Context of Violence on Mumbai’s Trains

This tragic event marks the second instance of fatal violence on Mumbai’s Western Railway suburban network in 2026. In February, a 32-year-old college lecturer was fatally stabbed during a confrontation while attempting to exit the train at Malad station. The police successfully apprehended the suspect in that earlier case, highlighting a recurring issue of violence on these overcrowded trains.

The re-emergence of such lethal incidents has provoked widespread concern among commuters regarding their safety while using Mumbai’s densely populated rail system. This most recent murder has prompted calls for stricter safety regulations and measures to prevent further occurrences.

As the investigation continues, Mayank’s family remains resolute in their demand for the harshest possible punishment for the accused in an effort to seek justice while highlighting the need for enhanced passenger safety protocols on the suburban railway network.
