The Saket Court in New Delhi recently recorded the testimony of a DNA expert regarding the ongoing trial of Aaftab Amin Poonawala, who is accused in the murder case of Shraddha Walkar. This statement is part of the proceedings involving the biological and DNA tests conducted during the investigation. The court has been hearing prosecution evidence on a daily basis, with further testimonies scheduled.

During the session, Additional Sessions Judge Hargurvarinder Singh Jaggi oversaw the examination-in-chief of prosecution witness V R Girnar. The cross-examination of this witness is set to occur at a later date. Special Public Prosecutor Madhukar Pandey, along with the complainant’s counsel Advocate Seema Samridhi Kushwaha, were present for the proceedings. The accused, Aaftab Amin Poonawala, is being represented by Advocate Akshay Bhandari.

Details of DNA Examination Provided

Dr. Girnar provided detailed information about the biological and DNA analyses that were performed in the case. He noted that the exhibits were received on December 23, 2022, and the corresponding report was finalised on January 3, 2023. Throughout his testimony, Dr. Girnar confirmed that the examination, documentation, sealing, and handling of the exhibits adhered to established protocols.

The court has planned to record the statement of Sub Inspector Sandeep in an upcoming session. This systematic approach to the trial is aimed at ensuring that all evidence is meticulously reviewed and verified. The proceedings are critical as they form the basis of the prosecution’s case against Poonawala.

On July 8, the Saket Court had postponed a hearing related to the case due to the MA (Sociology) examination of the accused, scheduled for July 20 at the IGNOU centre located within Tihar Jail premises. Such developments illustrate the various facets affecting the trial timeline.

Background of the Case

The murder case of Shraddha Walkar, who was reportedly killed by Aaftab Amin Poonawala in May 2022, has drawn significant public attention since its inception. The case first gained widespread notoriety when Walkar’s family reported her missing in November 2022, which led to an FIR being registered at the Mehrauli Police Station.

Reports allege that after committing the crime, Poonawala disposed of Walkar’s body parts in a nearby wooded area. This has raised various questions about the circumstances surrounding the murder and subsequent actions taken by the accused. The trial has been ongoing since the case was filed, with 2023 marking a significant period of developments in the courtroom.

The court has outlined that there are a total of eight prosecution witnesses, with 13 witnesses’ chief evidence having been partially recorded. Additionally, 12 witnesses are yet to provide their testimony. The court has scheduled hearings to be conducted daily from July 20 to July 27, 2026, in an effort to expedite this ongoing trial.
