Mumbai Train Door Dispute Turns Deadly; Accused Arrested After Fatal Stabbing of 22-Year-Old

The CSR Journal Magazine

A minor argument over closing a train door during heavy rain ended in tragedy on Mumbai’s Western Railway network after a 22-year-old passenger was allegedly stabbed to death inside a moving local train. Police have since arrested the accused following an extensive manhunt involving the review of hundreds of CCTV camera recordings.

The victim, Mayank Lohar, a resident of Virar, was travelling home in a first-class compartment of a Churchgate-Nallasopara fast local on Tuesday night when the incident took place. What began as a disagreement between passengers over whether the coach door should remain open or closed due to heavy rainfall quickly escalated into violence.

Argument Escalates Inside Moving Train

According to investigators, the dispute broke out between Goregaon and Kandivali stations. Passengers reportedly argued over closing the train door as rainwater entered the compartment. During the heated exchange, tensions rose and a scuffle followed.

Police said the accused, identified as Roshan Suvarna, allegedly pulled out a knife from his bag and stabbed Lohar in the abdomen. Panic spread through the coach as shocked commuters watched the incident unfold. A video recorded by passengers later showed the accused walking through the compartment with a knife in his hand while bloodstains were visible on the seats.

The train reached Borivali station shortly after the attack. Before it came to a complete halt, the accused allegedly jumped off and fled from the station premises. Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel rushed to the coach after receiving information about the stabbing.

Victim Dies Despite Rescue Efforts

Railway staff and security personnel immediately arranged medical assistance for Lohar. He was taken to the Emergency Medical Room at Borivali station and later shifted to Shatabdi Hospital in Kandivali for further treatment. However, doctors were unable to save him and he succumbed to his injuries.

Lohar worked as a salesman in Andheri and was returning home after completing his workday. His death has left his family devastated. Relatives have demanded strict action against the accused and stronger security measures on Mumbai’s suburban railway network.

Accused Tracked Through CCTV Network

Following the incident, multiple police teams were formed to identify and locate the suspect. Investigators examined footage from nearly 400 CCTV cameras installed across railway stations and nearby areas. The extensive operation helped police trace the accused’s movements after he fled from Borivali station.

The accused was arrested within hours of the crime. Reports said he was traced to the Mumbai metropolitan region after investigators pieced together his route using surveillance footage. Police have registered a murder case and are continuing their investigation to establish the full sequence of events.

The incident has once again highlighted concerns over commuter safety on Mumbai’s local trains, which carry millions of passengers every day. Citizens and railway commuters have called for increased security presence and stricter checks to prevent weapons from being carried onto trains and to stop minor disputes from turning into deadly incidents.
