Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister, Eknath Shinde, paid tribute to Dr B.R. Ambedkar on April 14, 2023, during a gathering at Chaitya Bhoomi in Mumbai. He described the occasion as not only a remembrance of a remarkable individual but also a festival celebrating self-respect for all citizens. Shinde remarked, “The soil turned to gold because of you, Bhim,” acknowledging Ambedkar’s significant impact on Indian society.

Large Gathering Pays Homage

The event saw a substantial turnout of followers and admirers, referred to by Shinde as a “Bhim Sagar,” all present to honour Ambedkar’s enduring legacy. During his address, Shinde stated, “Today, a Bhim Sagar has gathered at Chaitya Bhoomi. My salutations to all of you,” emphasising the respect and dedication attendees held for Ambedkar’s contributions. This day was framed as one not merely of remembrance but as a celebration of dignity for the entire nation.

Shinde highlighted Dr Ambedkar’s extensive role in framing the Indian Constitution. He stated that the birth anniversary serves as a reminder of the dignity and empowerment that Ambedkar sought for all people. “When he contested elections, his symbol was a human being. When he wrote the Constitution, he did so with the thought that every person should get justice,” Shinde added, noting the values that Ambedkar sought to instil across various communities.

Ambedkar’s Vision of Justice and Equality

In his address, Shinde articulated Ambedkar’s vision for justice and equality, emphasising that the guiding principles of the Indian Constitution continue to steer the nation forward. He pointed out the progress made in Indian society, citing examples of individuals from previously underrepresented backgrounds achieving prominent positions. “Where we stand today – a tribal woman as President, a farmer’s son who became Chief Minister and then Deputy Chief Minister,” he said, acknowledging how Ambedkar’s efforts have facilitated progress for various communities.

Shinde reiterated the importance of self-respect for women and highlighted the essential role of Ambedkar’s teachings in ensuring dignity for those from marginalised groups. He stressed that Ambedkar’s wisdom was not confined to academia but was shared throughout society, allowing ordinary citizens to access justice.

Continued Memorial Projects for Ambedkar

Shinde also mentioned ongoing efforts to complete the memorial at Indu Mill, with 95 per cent of the work reportedly finished. He noted that this initiative aligns with a vision to strengthen the nation by 2047. “By 2047, Modi has taken a pledge to make the nation strong,” he said, reflecting on the significance of Ambedkar’s contributions within a modern context.

Furthermore, he reported that a statue of Ambedkar is currently under construction at the site, symbolising the enduring legacy of the leader referred to fondly as ‘Babasaheb.’ As the first law and justice minister of independent India, Ambedkar’s influence remains a vital aspect of the nation’s identity and constitutional framework.

Overall, the observance of Ambedkar’s birth anniversary serves as a powerful reminder of his enduring impact on Indian society and the crucial role he played in advocating for justice, equality, and dignity for all individuals.
