During his visit to Pune, Amit Shah is scheduled to honour National Security Advisor Ajit Doval with the ‘Lokmanya Tilak National Award 2026’. Political Tensions Surrounding the Visit

A political atmosphere of contention has emerged in Pune amidst Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit. The Congress party has announced plans for a protest against Shah’s presence in the city, leading to a potential face-off. Prashant Jagtap, the President of Pune City (East) Congress and former Mayor, called on party members, students, and citizens to gather at Seven Loves Chowk on Shankarsheth Road to demonstrate against the minister.

The Congress has accused the central government of utilising excessive force against students protesting the NEET examination paper leak, claiming that these actions have resulted in injuries and legal cases against demonstrators. The party’s declared aim is to protest what they view as the Centre’s authoritarian policies towards the youth.

In response to the Congress protest, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has sought permission from Pune Police to organise a counter-demonstration at the same location. Citing the nature of the Congress protest as an attack on Shah’s official visit and the upcoming award ceremony, the BJP expressed concerns regarding the timing of the demonstration and its motivations.

Reiterating their support for Amit Shah, the BJP framed the award ceremony for NSA Doval as a distinguished event of pride for Pune. The party contended that the Congress’s actions represent an attempt to gain political traction at the expense of significant state functions. The BJP’s letter to the police emphasised their commitment to countering the Congress protest, branding it as politically motivated and reflective of the party’s perceived opportunism.
