Kolkata Police Deny Permission for Mamata’s 10-Hour Dharna; TMC Rejects Alternative ‘Y’ Channel Venue

The CSR Journal Magazine

Ahead of her scheduled sit-in demonstration on Tuesday, June 2, Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee has hit a major roadblock after Kolkata Police denied permission for her chose protest venue.

Banerjee had planned a 10-hour demonstration from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM at Esplanade’s Rani Rashmoni Road, with sources confirming she intended to be personally present from 2:00 PM onwards.

The Venue Deadlock

According to initial reports, local authorities refused to clear the high-profile protest at Rani Rashmoni Road. Instead, the police offered the *’Y’ Channel* in Esplanade as an alternative venue, capping the permitted duration at a strict *two hours*.

Sources within the TMC indicate that the party has rejected this counter-proposal, leaving the fate of Tuesday’s massive demonstration hanging in the balance.

A Role Reversal in Bengal Politics

Political observers have quickly pointed out the irony of the situation. During Banerjee’s tenure in power, opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari—who is now the Chief Minister—frequently accused her administration of denying police clearances for his rallies, forcing him to repeatedly approach the High Court for relief. Today, the tables have turned, with Banerjee’s party finding itself locked out by law enforcement.

### Internal Turmoil: TMC Expels Two MLAs

The standoff with the police comes at a time of intensifying internal friction for the Trinamool Congress. On Monday, the party officially expelled two of its MLAs, *Ritabrata Banerjee* and *Sandipan Saha*.

The expulsions follow recent explosive allegations made by the duo, who accused their own party of signature forgery. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari had previously highlighted these allegations during a press conference, triggering swift disciplinary retaliation from the TMC leadership.
