The BJP’s Jammu and Kashmir chief Sat Sharma has formally requested legal action against People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader Mehbooba Mufti, accusing her of showing disrespect towards the national flag, the Tricolour. His comments came during an interview with ANI on August 5, where he emphasised that this matter constituted a significant issue needing immediate redressal.

Sharma remarked that the authorities must determine the appropriate legal measures to adopt. He connected Mufti’s statements regarding Article 370 to his concerns about her respect for the national flag, stating, “How can we expect such people to respect the Tricolour?”

The BJP MP stressed the need for serious action, implying that the lack of respect shown could not be overlooked. He expressed a strong stance, suggesting a connection between Mufti’s previous remarks and her approach towards national symbols.

Mehbooba Mufti’s Protest and Statements

Prior to the controversy, on August 4, Mufti led a protest in Srinagar commemorating the seventh anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370. During this event, she reiterated her party’s commitment to restoring Jammu and Kashmir’s special status, as well as advocating for the release of political prisoners.

In her statements to the media, Mufti highlighted the significance of Articles 370 and 35A, asserting that these constitutional provisions were essential for the protection of local land and employment rights. She stated, “The PDP, our community, we will fight,” indicating a clear stance on preserving the region’s identity and rights.

She further critiqued the current government, suggesting that if the situation in Kashmir has improved, military presence should be withdrawn from civilian areas. Mufti voiced her concern over violence in the region, noting the recent deaths of two labourers from Chhattisgarh and the ongoing incarceration of individuals branded as Over Ground Workers (OGWs).

Broadening the Discussion on Article 370

Mufti has expressed that Article 370 is not merely a legal framework but also represents the core identity and dignity of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. She claimed the removal of this article has rendered the local population vulnerable, stating, “They have made us completely worthless.” She likened the situation to a dark period stemming from a “conspiracy” following the changes made by the BJP in Parliament.

In her address, the PDP chief remarked on historical ties, clarifying that the rights and conditions promised to Jammu and Kashmir at the time of accession to India must be upheld. She expressed sentiments that the essence of these guarantees is being systematically undermined by the current central administration.

Mufti concluded by asserting her insistence on the restoration of Articles 370 and 35A, declaring that the Jammu and Kashmir issue must also be addressed. Her intentions to mobilise public support through ongoing protests indicate her commitment to keeping the dialogue around these issues alive.
