Amid internal rifts within the Trinamool Congress (TMC) following its defeat in the Assembly elections, former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday struck a defiant note, vowing to fight back and rallying party workers to stay united.

In a live video posted on social media, Banerjee urged supporters to remain resilient despite a wave of defections by leaders and MLAs. She alleged that she was being deliberately prevented from carrying out political programmes, claiming that permissions for public events were being denied. “I am not being allowed to step out onto the streets. Permissions for political programmes are being denied, forcing me to approach the courts,” she said.

Banerjee further alleged that constitutional and democratic rights were being curtailed.

Referring to Articles 14, 19, and 21, she said the fundamental rights guaranteed to citizens were being violated. Expressing frustration over the lack of relief despite approaching the Supreme Court, she remarked, “In the words of Rabindranath Tagore, the voice of justice still weeps silently and in solitude.”

Direct attack on BJP, vows comeback

Launching a direct attack on the ruling BJP, Banerjee declared, “The more you try to stop me, the stronger I will bounce back.” Emphasizing that her priority was the welfare of the people rather than holding office, she said, “I do not care about the chair; I care about the people. Keep this firmly in mind.” She added, “I will fight; we will fight, build, and win.”

The TMC leader alleged that false cases were being filed against thousands of party workers and ordinary citizens. She accused the BJP of forcibly taking control of local bodies, including panchayats, municipalities, and zilla parishads. “Your BJP MLAs are sitting in the chairs of BDOs and ICs,” she claimed, alleging coercion and financial irregularities at the grassroots level.

Banerjee also alleged that she was being personally targeted, stating that she had never drawn a salary or pension and relied on royalties from her books for sustenance. “Even those royalties were withheld this year,” she claimed.

Concerns over delimitation, law and order

Raising concerns over the ongoing delimitation and census processes, Banerjee alleged that these were being conducted without informing opposition parties. Claiming that around 32 lakh names had already been excluded, she questioned the transparency of the exercise and warned of a larger conspiracy.

Attacking the BJP government over law and order and women’s safety, she alleged that the state was being run with the patronage of criminal elements. “You have turned Bengal into a prison. Where has my ‘Sonar Bangla’ gone?” she asked.

Alleging widespread “saffronisation” of the administration, Banerjee warned that such repression would not last. Addressing the public, she said, “Sometimes silence is golden. But there comes a time when all barriers break. When that moment arrives, no force can stop the river from flowing on its own path.”

Her remarks come at a time when the TMC is grappling with internal dissent and political setbacks, even as Banerjee seeks to mobilise support for a renewed political battle.
