Sushila Devi, a 63-year-old resident of Bhadangi village in Rewari district, Haryana, has achieved a significant milestone by passing the Class 10 examination with a commendable score of 79.6 per cent. This accomplishment serves not only as a personal triumph but also as a fulfilment of her long-cherished aspiration to contest the local panchayat elections and become the village sarpanch. At an age when many consider their academic pursuits as complete, Sushila has rewritten the narrative of what is possible.

Her educational journey took a notable turn after she had to discontinue her studies after Class 5 due to familial obligations nearly six decades ago. This left her with the label of being only “Class 5 pass” for years. However, her determination to change this perception led to her enrolment in the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), where she successfully prepared for and participated in the secondary examination, earning a first division. Sushila’s grit illustrates a powerful example of lifelong learning.

Family Support as a Catalyst for Education

Sushila found encouragement and motivation from her son, Vishnu, who played a pivotal role in her educational journey. He facilitated her application process for the NIOS examination and provided unwavering support throughout her studies. Initially, subjects like Mathematics, Science, and English were daunting, but with encouragement from her family, she gradually developed confidence in her abilities. This familial backing proved essential in her success.

In preparation for her exams, Sushila dedicated three to four hours each day to her studies while concurrently managing household tasks. This balance of responsibilities exemplifies her commitment to achieving her goals. When the NIOS exam results were released in April 2026, she celebrated passing with impressive scores, including 89 in English, 88 in Science and Technology, 78 in Mathematics, 76 in Painting, and 67 in Hindi.

Sushila’s achievement has not only brought pride to her family but has also resonated with the entire village. Her journey of returning to education later in life serves as an inspiration for others within her community.

A Message of Encouragement for Others

In light of her experiences, Sushila aims to inspire others by conveying that age should not be a barrier to education. “I want to tell all women and young people that there is no age limit for education. If one has the desire to learn and the support of family, any goal can be achieved,” she stated. This message highlights the important role of community and family encouragement in pursuing education at any stage of life.

With her recent success, Sushila Devi does not intend to stop here. She plans to continue her educational journey further and is steadfast in her desire to become a sarpanch. Her determination serves as a reminder that returning to studies is achievable at any age, supported by the belief and encouragement of loved ones.
