Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has emphasised her dedication to empowering women through the Lakshmi Yojana, a direct bank transfer initiative designed to support eligible women with monthly financial assistance. In a statement made on August 7, the commencement day of the Delhi Assembly Session, she expressed her satisfaction with fulfilling promises made to the women of Delhi, asserting that the government stands firmly beside them under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Gupta’s remarks were made in the context of the scheme’s recent implementation, aimed at providing Rs 2,500 monthly to qualifying women residents of the national capital. As she spoke, several BJP women leaders and party workers adorned her with garlands, showcasing their support for the initiative, which they see as a vital step towards enhancing women’s rights and financial independence.

Launch of Lakshmi Yojana Registration Portal

The Delhi government officially launched the registration portal for the Lakshmi Yojana on August 1, 2026. The portal saw remarkable engagement on its first day, recording approximately 1.47 lakh registrations, as per information shared by the Chief Minister’s Office. This strong initial response indicates a significant interest among women in Delhi to benefit from the financial assistance provided under the scheme.

However, the initiative has attracted scrutiny from opposition parties. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has voiced concerns regarding a stipulation requiring a ten-year residency for applicants. AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj contended that this provision could potentially exclude women from the Purvanchal region, suggesting that the rule could create barriers to access for a segment of the eligible female population.

The concerns raised by AAP reflect ongoing political discussions surrounding women’s rights and the accessibility of government assistance programmes. As the new scheme begins to unfold, dialogues regarding its implementation will likely continue to shape its perception within the community.

Assembly Sessions and Legislative Developments

During the current assembly session, which includes three scheduled sittings on August 7, 10, and 11, significant legislative proposals are expected to be discussed. Among these is the introduction of the Delhi Bed and Breakfast Establishments (Repeal) Bill, 2026, by State Tourism Minister Kapil Mishra. This bill aims to repeal the National Capital Territory of Delhi (Incredible India) Bed and Breakfast Establishments (Registration and Regulation) Act, 2007, along with its amendments made in subsequent years.

In addition, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta is set to present the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report on the governance of the National Capital Territory of Delhi during the session. This report is anticipated to provide insights into financial management and accountability within the local administration. Furthermore, Power Minister Ashish Sood will table copies of relevant regulations and notifications related to Delhi school education, which are critical for understanding the legislative backdrop affecting the educational landscape.
