The CSR Journal Magazine

The Gujarat Police have launched ‘Operation Surakshit Cyberspace’, a significant 28-day campaign dedicated to improving online safety for women and children. The initiative commenced on July 1 and will conclude on July 28, 2026. This campaign has been designed to create a resilient digital environment and is focused on preventing cybercrime targeting vulnerable populations.

According to a release from the Chief Minister’s office, the operation aims to safeguard women and children from cyber threats through various strategies, including community involvement, advanced technological surveillance, victim outreach, and legal promptness. The police are committed to ensuring that the online world remains safe for all users, in addition to their duties on the ground.

As stated by Ajay Choudhary, Additional Director General of Police from the Women Cell section of the CID (Crime), the campaign has a clear objective: to enhance public safety in cyberspace for those most at risk of cyber-related crimes such as harassment and fraud.

Implementation Strategies

The campaign prioritises creating a secure online atmosphere through methods such as field-level verification and digital awareness initiatives. Police personnel will focus on identifying those at risk, verifying reports of cybercrime, and providing counselling to potential victims.

Furthermore, the initiative includes establishing robust communication with banks, telecom providers, educational institutions, and local NGOs. This collaboration is crucial for spreading awareness and implementing preventive measures throughout the community.

Significantly, the operation will employ a structured framework with specific roles and performance indicators assigned to field officers, which will facilitate effective monitoring and accountability during the campaign. The emphasis is placed on proactive measures that can avert cybercrime before it impacts individuals financially, emotionally, or psychologically.

Community Engagement and Awareness Goals

Local SHE Teams and specialised Cyber Crime Police Stations will lead the grassroots activities of Operation Surakshit Cyberspace. They are responsible for conducting awareness programmes and engaging directly with the community to make sure that women, children, and educational establishments are well-informed about online dangers.

The campaign has set ambitious statewide targets, including informing 25 lakh citizens about cyber safety, encouraging 20 lakh students to commit to a Cyber Safety Pledge, and organising educational sessions in 10,000 schools and 1,500 colleges. The aim is to effectively sensitize one lakh adolescent girls about critical issues such as cyberstalking and online harassment, alongside conducting 5,000 parental awareness workshops.

The initiative also promises to ensure that preliminary police action is taken within 24 hours for any complaints involving women and children, showcasing a commitment to prompt and effective response in dealing with cyber incidents.

Ultimately, Operation Surakshit Cyberspace illustrates the Gujarat Police’s dedication to fostering a safe and inclusive digital environment. By combining technology, community collaboration, and informed policing strategies, the endeavour aims to enhance public trust in law enforcement while ensuring that all individuals can engage with digital platforms confidently and securely.
