Google Introduces Googlebook, An AI-Driven Competitor To MacBook Neo

The CSR Journal Magazine

Googlebook has been unveiled as a new category of laptop designed to transform laptop usage, built specifically around Google’s AI, Gemini. This announcement was made during The Android Show: IO Edition 2026, and Googlebooks are expected to compete directly with the successful MacBook Neo from Apple, which is reportedly ramping up production in response to its popularity.

The Googlebook combines features from both Android and ChromeOS, allowing users to run Android applications natively while enjoying an experience similar to that of Chromebooks. This new device has been anticipated for some time, with speculation surrounding Google’s focus on a new Android-based operating system.

All Googlebooks are expected to utilise high-quality materials similar to those found in the MacBook Neo, along with a unique design element known as the “glowbar.” This glowbar is said to have additional functionalities that have yet to be fully disclosed.

AI Capabilities of Googlebook

A central feature of the Googlebook is its integration with Gemini AI, which provides various new functionalities that are soon to be available on Android smartphones as well. For example, users can engage a feature called “Magic Pointer,” a cursor that can transition to provide AI-powered suggestions based on user interactions. This was developed in collaboration with the Google DeepMind team, potentially enhancing user efficiency.

With the Magic Pointer, users can perform actions such as scheduling a meeting by pointing at a date in an email, or visualising two items together, such as furniture arrangements. This feature aims to streamline workflows and improve overall user experience.

Additionally, Googlebook users will have the ability to create customised widgets by issuing prompts to the Gemini system. This capability is expected to include internet searches and connections to Google applications like Gmail and Calendar, enabling the creation of a personalised dashboard. For instance, a user planning a family event could ask Gemini to compile travel and accommodation details, restaurant reservations, and countdowns into one accessible location.

Launch Plans for Googlebook

Google has yet to announce a specific product associated with the Googlebook during the show. However, the company confirmed its collaboration with prominent manufacturers including Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo to bring Googlebooks to market. These devices are projected to feature premium materials and be available in a variety of sizes and configurations.

The expected launch window for Googlebooks is set for the forthcoming fall season. In terms of continuity for existing devices, Google has reassured users that Chromebooks will continue to receive support throughout their ten-year lifespan, though it remains uncertain whether new Chromebook models will be introduced.

Google’s latest product aims not just to innovate within its existing operating systems, but also to redefine how consumers engage with laptop technology. This move represents a strategic attempt to carve out a significant share of the notebook market, traditionally dominated by Apple.
