Over 1 Lakh Senior Citizens and 4.63 Lakh Women Reported Financial Cyber Fraud Complaints in 2025

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has disclosed that in the year 2025, a significant number of financial cyber fraud complaints were filed by individuals. Specifically, 1,03,488 senior citizens and 4,63,114 women lodged these complaints, collectively amounting to Rs 7,769.63 crore. The information was shared with the Rajya Sabha on August 5, 2025, as part of a written response by Union Minister of State for Home, Bandi Sanjay Kumar.

The figures presented by the Minister highlight the financial impact of cyber fraud on vulnerable demographics, with senior citizens reporting losses of Rs 4,005.12 crore, while women detailed losses of Rs 3,764.51 crore. This alarming trend underscores the need for increased awareness and preventive measures against cyber crimes.

The data was sourced from the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP), which serves as a central repository for complaints related to cyber offences. This system aims to facilitate streamlined reporting and response to cyber incidents.

Government’s Role and Responsibilities

Bandi’s remarks indicated that while local authorities carry the burden of direct intervention in cyber crime, the MHA is committed to enhancing the operational effectiveness of these bodies through various means. This ensures a more robust response to the growing threat of cyber-related offences.

Launch of Cyber Crime Initiatives

Additionally, the Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System (CFCFRMS) was launched in 2021 to facilitate immediate reporting of financial frauds. This initiative is aimed at preventing fraudsters from siphoning off funds from victims quickly, thereby mitigating potential financial losses.
