On August 11, 2026, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi raised concerns about Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s absence during a crucial two-day discussion on education held in Parliament. The session featured contributions from prominent Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. Gogoi questioned why Shah was not present during this significant discourse.

In his statements, Gogoi pointed out the involvement of other Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders, specifically mentioning remarks made by Minister Jitendra Singh. He highlighted that Shah’s lack of participation during the discussions raises questions about the government’s commitment to addressing educational issues, particularly when multiple statements were issued by the ruling party.

Gogoi emphasised that the absence of the Education Minister during the debate was equally alarming. He remarked that the Opposition had been requesting the minister’s presence for approximately 15 days, implying a disregard for parliamentary procedure and responsibility on the part of the government.

Concerns Regarding Government Accountability

Gogoi asserted that the government was now attempting to initiate discussions on educational matters only at the conclusion of the session, which he deemed inappropriate. He remarked, “This is not the court of some king or maharaja where one can remain absent during a discussion.” The Congress MP urged that the House should be treated with the seriousness and responsibility it deserves, rather than as a platform for last-minute debates.

Moreover, he raised critical questions regarding the alleged use of pellet guns during student protests, demanding accountability from Amit Shah. Gogoi insisted, “He must accept responsibility: where did the order to fire pellet guns come from?” He pressed for clarity on whether the decision originated from Shah’s office or if he was simply unaware, arguing that either scenario necessitated a resignation.

In addition, Gogoi highlighted a need for a discussion on the issue of purported “donation theft,” further underlining the government’s accountability regarding student welfare and safety amidst the protests.

Responses to Protests and Prime Minister’s Stance

Addressing the ongoing student protests in Jharkhand, Gogoi noted that Rahul Gandhi had immediately condemned the alleged police lathi-charge against demonstrators. He mentioned Gandhi’s prompt response as indicative of the Congress party’s support for the students and their right to protest against any form of violence.

Gogoi also accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP government of attempting to protect Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan from accountability. He condemned the questioning of student protesters’ character, asserting that their motives should not be undermined based on their participation in legitimate demonstrations.

Furthermore, Gogoi referred to interactions with young women who recounted experiences of abusive language directed at them during the protests. He urged the Prime Minister to reflect on the impact of such abuses on women, questioning Modi’s silence in light of these allegations and expressing concern for the treatment of female protesters at events such as those at Jantar Mantar.
