Congress General Secretary and MP KC Venugopal reiterated the party’s insistence on Union Home Minister Amit Shah providing a statement regarding police actions taken against protesters on July 20. This statement was made in the context of an ongoing deadlock between the ruling party and the opposition in Parliament.

Venugopal expressed that the Congress party will not allow the deadlock to end until they receive Shah’s statement in the House. He emphasised the necessity of the Home Minister’s presence, stating, “Our stand is very clear on that. First, HM Amit Shah should come to Parliament and give a statement on atrocities against the students of Delhi.” The opposition’s unwavering stance signifies a tense atmosphere within Parliament.

The proceedings in both Houses of Parliament were adjourned until noon due to the ongoing logjam. The Centre was anticipated to present several key bills that day, including the Tribunals Reforms Bill, the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Bill, the Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, and the National Co-operative Development Corporation (Amendment) Bill. Despite this, the opposition remained adamant about their demands.

Priyanka Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi Support Opposition’s Stance

Earlier on the same day, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra conveyed her view that the deadlock would persist until Union Home Minister Amit Shah addressed the House. She stated, “I think the deadlock will continue until the Union Home Minister gives a statement in Parliament,” indicating a collective opposition front focused on this issue.

Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, launched a pointed critique of the government’s inaction, alleging that Shah’s silence regarding the police action suggests tacit approval of the violence. He articulated this sentiment in a post on X, condemning the government’s response to peaceful student protests.

Gandhi’s statement included grave accusations of police brutality against students, referring to the use of pellet guns and tear gas. He underscored that nearly 20 days had passed without Shah addressing Parliament or responding to any motions for discussion raised by the opposition, calling it an endorsement of violent actions. Gandhi demanded a Supreme Court-monitored inquiry into the events.

Opposition MPs Continue Protests for Accountability

The situation escalated as opposition MPs initiated protests within the Parliament premises, demanding accountability from Amit Shah. Their protests also highlighted concerns regarding alleged misappropriation of funds intended for the Ayodhya Ram Temple.
