BJP workers caused significant disruption on Ratu Road in Ranchi as part of a state-wide Jharkhand Bandh on August 11. This action followed ongoing protests by aspirants of the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC). The protests were in response to alleged police brutality during a large demonstration the previous day, which involved clashes between students and law enforcement near the Legislative Assembly.

The situation escalated on Monday, leading to a reported lathi charge and the use of tear gas and water cannons by the police. In a statement to ANI, Union Minister of State Sanjay Seth claimed that the entire state was effectively shut down due to the police’s alleged excessive force. He expressed concern over the Chief Minister’s perceived lack of empathy towards the students involved.

Student Aspirants Demand Reforms

Students from all 24 districts of Jharkhand have gathered to voice their demands, which include the cancellation of the JSSC Combined Graduate Level (CGL) examination and a comprehensive CBI investigation into repeated paper leaks. Student leader Ravinder Pasawan explained that their protest initially remained peaceful until late Monday evening when police forcibly removed them from outside the Assembly gate.

According to Pasawan, despite the peaceful nature of their protest, the administration became increasingly aggressive toward the end of the day. He noted that they had waited for a positive response from the government until 5:00 PM, but when none was provided, they chose to sit in protest. Many participants, including female students, reportedly sustained injuries during the police intervention.

Pasawan emphasised their continued commitment to their demands, appealing to the Chief Minister to acknowledge them as valid and reasonable. He declared that the indefinite protest would persist until the Jharkhand government took action regarding their grievances.

Police Response to Protests

The Jharkhand Police were actively involved in attempting to regulate the large crowds formed during the ‘Vidhan Sabha gherao’ march. Their response included the use of lathis and water cannons in an effort to disperse aspiring candidates protesting against perceived irregularities in the JPSC and JSSC examinations. Participants claimed the state administration had previously been cooperative, but tensions escalated dramatically on Monday evening.

Demonstrators voiced their frustrations over alleged inefficiencies and irregularities within the recruitment process, prompting calls for immediate reforms. As the protests gained momentum, concerns over police conduct continued to dominate discussions among those involved and observers alike. The students insisted their demands were reasonable and should be met by the authorities.

The situation reflects broader discontent among youth in Jharkhand regarding recruitment and examination processes, particularly as they await a resolution to the ongoing issues. The protests have not only highlighted the specific grievances of the aspirants but also raised questions about governance and accountability within the state administration.
