Delhi Records Season’s First Severe Heatstroke Case as 24-Year-Old Man Lands in Critical Condition

The CSR Journal Magazine

Delhi has registered its first significant case of heatstroke this summer, with a 24-year-old man being admitted to Dr Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital in an unconscious state on May 21, 2026. The individual, who was reportedly travelling by train, was brought to the emergency care facility shortly after 1:45 am. Medical staff quickly initiated life-saving measures to address his condition, which included tackling an alarming internal body temperature.

The patient, hailing from West Bengal, exhibited critical symptoms, including intense fatigue, vomiting, and loose motions prior to his loss of consciousness. According to the Nodal Officer at RML Hospital, the young man had no underlying health issues, which has made his sudden health crisis particularly concerning.

Upon arrival at the hospital, immediate cooling procedures were implemented, where the individual was submerged in ice water to stabilise his body temperature. Following these initial efforts, he was subsequently admitted to the medicine ward as a serious case. The medical team remains closely monitoring his ongoing condition, which they describe as very serious.

Health Officials Urge Caution During Heatwave

Dr Ajay Chauhan, the Nodal Officer at RML Hospital, issued a public reminder regarding the dangers of heatstroke, known colloquially as loo lagna. He emphasised that this condition poses serious health risks and advised the public to take precautionary measures, especially in light of recent warnings from the Meteorological Department about extreme heat conditions. He recommended that individuals stay hydrated, consume salt water, and seek shade when engaging in outdoor activities.

The ongoing heatwave in Delhi and parts of northern India has resulted in temperatures exceeding 44 degrees Celsius. This spike in heat has raised concerns among health practitioners and weather officials, prompting calls for the community to stay vigilant against heat-related health issues.

Doctor Atul Kakar, Chairperson of the Department of Internal Medicine at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, noted a marked increase in patients presenting with heat-related ailments. He highlighted conditions such as dehydration and heatstroke as becoming increasingly prevalent under the current heatwave, particularly for vulnerable populations like children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions.

Delhi Government Responds with Heat Relief Initiatives

In response to the severe weather conditions, the Delhi government is implementing a series of measures aimed at assisting citizens affected by the extreme heat. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta outlined these initiatives in a recent statement, asserting that the administration is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of every resident during this challenging period.

The government has deployed 13 mobile heat relief units to provide essential resources such as cold drinking water, ORS packets, and first aid, particularly in crowded areas. Gupta affirmed that these units are intended to deliver tangible assistance and not merely be an announcement of support. Additionally, provisions have been made for cool rooms in hospitals and access to water bell systems in schools to further combat the adverse effects of the heat.

The Chief Minister’s comments resonate with the ongoing challenges faced in the city, as officials work in what they describe as mission mode to mitigate heat-induced distress. The aim is to ensure that all citizens, from labourers to the elderly, have adequate support during this extreme weather period.
