The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has ordered the closure of the canteen at the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) headquarters following hygiene violations identified during an inspection. This decision was made on Thursday after a fly was reportedly discovered in a glass of buttermilk served at the facility.

The inspection was part of the FDA’s ongoing initiative aimed at ensuring adherence to food safety and hygiene standards across various eateries and public institutions. Officials scrutinised the canteen for nearly five hours before issuing a directive to its operator, Kamal Caterers, mandating the immediate suspension of all food services.

Complaints regarding the quality of food provided at the canteen served as the impetus for this inspection. Allegations of unsanitary conditions intensified after the discovery of the insect in the beverage. FDA officials evaluated the overall hygiene practices, food handling procedures, and compliance with established safety regulations during their investigation.

Operator Penalised Alongside Canteen Closure

In conjunction with sealing the canteen, authorities from the BMC’s Health and Labour Department took further action against the operator, Kamal Caterers. A penalty of approximately Rs 50,000 was imposed as a consequence of the lapses identified during the inspection.

The FDA stated that such actions are part of a broader campaign aimed at reinforcing food safety enforcement within public institutions. Ensuring that eateries comply with hygienic practices is a critical component of maintaining public health and welfare.

As a result of the inspection, the canteen has been ordered to remain closed pending rectification of the identified deficiencies. It will only be permitted to resume operations once it has demonstrated compliance with food safety standards and obtained the necessary authorisation from the appropriate authorities.
