The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of Maharashtra has suspended the food licence of a food establishment in Malad after the inspection revealed multiple serious violations. This action was taken following an inspection conducted on August 7 at the premises located at Sarvodaya Bhuvan, Ramchandra Lane, Malad (West), Mumbai. The inspection was carried out by Food Safety Officers, who discovered significant issues regarding hygiene and food safety compliance.

Findings of Lack of Hygiene and Safety Compliance

During the inspection, officials identified several deficiencies, including the improper storage of food products. Food articles were observed being kept on dirty and contaminated racks and directly on the floor, raising major concerns about hygiene. Additionally, cold-storage facilities were not maintained adequately, and expired or damaged packaged food products were found on-site. These factors contribute to a risky food environment that may endanger consumer health.

Another significant issue highlighted was the large-scale presence of rodents in areas designated for the storage of vegetables and fruits. This rodent infestation poses a critical risk of food contamination, which is in direct violation of food safety regulations. The lack of effective control measures for insects and rodents was also noted, indicating a severe shortcoming in maintaining proper food safety standards.

Further concerns arose around poor waste management practices observed during the inspection. Records pertaining to the medical examinations and health documentation of food handlers were not adequately maintained, exacerbating the compliance issues with food safety regulations. This failure to adhere to regulatory requirements demonstrates a lack of commitment to consumer health and safety.

Regulatory Action and Immediate Suspension

In response to the findings, the FDA has acted under Section 32(3) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, along with relevant provisions of the Food Safety and Standards (Licensing and Registration of Food Businesses) Regulations, 2011. The establishment’s food licence has been suspended effective immediately from July 27, 2026. The suspension will remain in place until further orders are issued, indicating a stringent approach by the regulatory body.

During this suspension period, the food establishment is prohibited from selling, distributing, or conducting any food business involving food products. This decisive action aims to prevent any potential risks to public health stemming from the alleged unhygienic conditions previously observed.

The FDA has emphasised that strict legal action will be pursued if the establishment is found to be operating during the suspension period. This serves as a warning to ensure compliance with all significant food safety standards and regulations. The commitment of the Maharashtra FDA to upholding food safety is evident through this firm response.
