Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has publicly condemned the central government regarding the disruption of the Monsoon Session in Parliament. He expressed his concerns on August 13, asserting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah have not been present to engage with the Opposition during critical discussions. Kharge’s remarks underscore a growing frustration among opposition leaders about the government’s approach to parliamentary proceedings.

Kharge emphasised the importance of participation in parliamentary debates, stating, “When the Prime Minister himself is not attending, and when the Home Minister does not come in to acknowledge the issues being raised, do they just wait in their rooms to listen?” He urged both leaders to actively engage with Members of Parliament, rather than remaining absent.

The Congress leader accused the government of undermining democratic processes and demoralising parliamentarians. He claimed that the ruling party appears to regard Parliament as insignificant, asserting that this attitude could lead to a backlash from the citizenry.

Condemnation of Religious Event in Haldwani

In addition to his comments about Parliament, Kharge reacted to a recent event, described as a ‘shuddhikaran’ havan, which took place at Ramlila Maidan in Haldwani after he addressed a rally. He denounced the event, stating that such actions contribute to division within the country. Kharge declared that aligning such purification rituals with political agendas undermines the social fabric of India.

Kharge further asserted that if individuals affiliated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are conducting purification ceremonies in the name of religion, they are jeopardising national unity. He advocated for legal action against those responsible for the event, stating that they should face consequences for their actions.

He reiterated the notion that such divisive tactics weaken the country and called for a more inclusive approach to governance that respects all citizens, regardless of their beliefs.

Parliamentary Session Adjourned Amid Protests

On the final day of the Monsoon Session, the Lok Sabha was adjourned sine die following the customary commencement with the playing of Vande Mataram. This decision came amid ongoing protests from Opposition members that significantly disrupted proceedings. The chaos highlights the ongoing tensions between the ruling party and the opposition.

In a display of political rivalry, there were intense counter-protests between the BJP and Opposition MPs at the Makar Dwar steps within the Parliament vicinity. The BJP’s protests were primarily directed at Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, specifically regarding the Congress party’s perceived disregard for ongoing demonstrations in Jharkhand.

Amidst the unrest, Congress MP Pawan Khera led a protest that included provocative sloganeering, notably featuring a toy monkey, which coalesced in chants against the ruling party’s leadership. The Opposition’s actions were emblematic of the escalating confrontations that characterise the current political landscape in India.
