Clashes Erupt During Demolition Drive in Bandra East, Resulting in 15 Arrests

The CSR Journal Magazine

The recent demolition drive in the Garib Nagar Slum, located adjacent to Bandra Station’s eastern side, has attracted significant media attention. The initiative, aimed at reclaiming roughly 5,200 to 5,300 square metres for railway expansion by Western Railway (WR), initiated on May 19. While some community members have supported the move, many slum residents have expressed their discontent, reportedly leading to violent protests against the operation.

Western Railway, in collaboration with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Mumbai Police, commenced the demolition with the presence of bulldozers at the site. Over a period of three days, authorities purportedly dismantled approximately 85 per cent of the structures, which included both homes and shops. Vineet Abhishek, Western Railway’s Public Relations officer, stated that they acted in compliance with a Bombay High Court order, leaving around 100 structures intact as mandated by the court.

Public Response and Controversy

This demolition operation, designed to enhance public infrastructure by improving connectivity between Bandra Terminus and suburban stations, has sparked widespread controversy. Many families affected by the demolitions voiced their grievances, seeking permission to salvage their household items from the wreckage, yet their requests were met with indifference. A video circulated on social media depicting an elderly woman distraught over the loss of her home highlighted the emotional toll of the demolition.

Activists and community members have also expressed their disapproval of the demolition drive. Siraj Noorani, an activist and journalist, shared on X that the slum, inhabited for nearly two centuries, now lies in ruins as families observed the destruction of their homes. They have gathered with their belongings in open spaces, unable to secure their livelihoods.

The push for infrastructure improvement has come under scrutiny as many argue that the needs of the residents have been overlooked in favour of developmental goals. Critics contend that such actions, while framed as progress, have severe social implications for the affected populations.

Violence and Police Response

The confrontations resulted in injuries to 13 individuals, prompting the police to take stringent measures to restore order. Following these violent protests, Mumbai Police arrested 15 individuals allegedly involved in the clashes. Further arrests are anticipated as investigations continue into the unrest during the demolition drive.

Maharashtra’s Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, informed the media that police intervention was necessary only after the protests escalated. He emphasized that orders of the law were upheld following the violence initiated by the protestors against law enforcement during the operation.
