BSES Yamuna Power Limited (BYPL) unveiled two significant initiatives on July 20 in alignment with the Delhi Government’s vision for an advanced power infrastructure. These include BYPL’s first smart pad-mounted substation located at Amar Mohalla, Gandhi Nagar, alongside the ‘Solarise East’ programme aimed at promoting residential rooftop solar energy adoption across East Delhi. The launches occurred during an event at Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, attended by government officials and local community members.

The event featured the presence of various dignitaries, including Minister of State for Road Transport & Highways Harsh Malhotra and Delhi’s Minister for Power Ashish Sood. Other attendees included local MLAs and representatives from Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) and market groups, marking a comprehensive community engagement.

BSES leadership, represented by senior officials including Amal Sinha, Director and Group CEO, highlighted the commitment to innovative power solutions. The smart substation and ‘Solarise East’ are considered pivotal steps towards sustainable energy distribution, showcasing how modern engineering can accommodate growing electricity needs.

Government Officials Acknowledge Power Infrastructure Advancements

Malhotra praised the efforts of the Delhi Power Department under Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s guidance. He noted that the government is actively enhancing infrastructure to meet the increasing electricity demand in the national capital. Additionally, he pointed out that the initiatives from BSES are designed to reinforce this objective.

Minister Sood remarked that effective governance extends beyond addressing current challenges to anticipating future opportunities. He emphasized the importance of modernising substations and expanding solar initiatives as vital to creating a resilient and eco-friendly energy framework. He cited a substantial investment of Rs 1,427 crore in power infrastructure and the successful management of peak power demands reaching 8,748 MW.

BYPL aims to transform electricity distribution through these ventures. The compact substation at Gandhi Nagar demonstrates cutting-edge technology, while the ‘Solarise East’ initiative seeks to encourage households to harness solar energy, thus contributing to overall energy savings and sustainability.

Innovative Smart Substation to Address Local Demand

The smart substation in Gandhi Nagar was developed to tackle the unique challenges posed by the area’s narrow lanes and high commercial activity. The previous substation, which operated at nearly full capacity, necessitated additional infrastructure to support both current and future electricity requirements. The smart installations occupy significantly less space compared to traditional substations, thereby allowing for more efficient use of limited land resources.

Constructed at a cost of approximately Rs 1.60 crore, the two compact substations provide an increased capacity of around 380 kVA, serving roughly 1,400 consumers. Their design integrates essential components within a secure, touch-proof structure, ensuring operational safety and ease of maintenance.

The smart substation’s features include remote monitoring capabilities and advanced fault isolation mechanisms, reducing supply interruptions during maintenance and enhancing overall reliability for users. The strategic installation of this technology is critical for improving service in densely populated urban settings.

‘Solarise East’ Aims to Simplify Rooftop Solar Adoption

‘Solarise East’ is a community-oriented initiative launched under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, intended to facilitate easier access to rooftop solar for East Delhi households. Many residents find it challenging to navigate the complexities of solar adoption, from choosing suitable systems to understanding financing options and technical criteria.

BYPL plans to support consumers through an interactive approach, engaging local stakeholders such as RWAs and educational institutions. Through meetings, workshops, and digital outreach, the initiative aims to build public confidence in solar technology and streamline the installation process.

Targeting long-term engagement rather than a brief awareness campaign, ‘Solarise East’ aims to assist residents from initial inquiries to the final installation. This initiative seeks not only to reduce electricity costs but also to promote the generation of clean energy at the residential level, contributing to a sustainable energy future for Delhi.
