A tragic school shooting occurred outside Bangkok, resulting in the deaths of eight individuals, including the shooter himself. Investigations revealed that the 14-year-old assailant first shot his grandparents before proceeding to his school, where he killed six other people. The local police reported that the teen had allegedly utilised social media platforms to learn about handling firearms.

Deputy Commissioner Atthapol Anusit noted that witness testimonies indicated the shooter had shown an increasing interest in firearms over the past one to two years. The police investigation is ongoing, and they have interviewed 17 individuals to gather further insights into his actions prior to the shooting.

Background of the Shooter and His Family

The young shooter lived with his grandparents for twelve years after his parents’ separation. Despite this challenging family background, his mother described him as a “bright, cheerful person,” and stated that she had not observed any signs of distress or troubling behaviour in him. She recounted that she had asked him about possible bullying, to which he consistently responded negatively.

Atthapol confirmed that a BB gun, a type of air gun, had previously been confiscated by a teacher last year. Investigations revealed that a knife was also found in the boy’s school bag. Other evidence collected from the crime scenes included a firearm, spent cartridge cases, and a personal computer, which indicated a history of viewing violent content online.

Upon examination of the computer, officials found that the teenager had consumed social media content portraying violence. However, there was no evidence suggesting that he had practised shooting prior to the incident.

Government Response and Future Safety Protocols

The Thai Ministry of Education has announced plans to implement new safety protocols in schools over the next three months. These measures will include mental health screenings for students, procedures for referring at-risk individuals to specialists, and drills to prepare for emergency situations. Furthermore, there will be a concentrated effort to combat bullying and improve detection mechanisms to prevent dangerous items from being brought into educational institutions.

The tragedy marks the worst mass shooting in Thailand since 2022, leading to renewed discussions around firearm regulations in the nation, noted for having one of the highest rates of gun ownership in Southeast Asia. In addition to the fatalities, over 20 individuals sustained injuries during the shooting.

The boy’s mother shared her regret and devastation in light of her son’s actions. She expressed that nobody anticipated such a horrific event would occur. On the day of the shooting, she was unaware of her son’s involvement and attempted to reach him after learning about the incident, simply urging him to contact her if he was in any trouble.
