A delegation from the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction) convened with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 10 in New Delhi, amid the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament. The meeting aimed to address various pressing issues facing the state of Maharashtra, including those related to natural disasters and agricultural challenges.

During the discussions, the MPs articulated their concerns regarding flooding and the impact of excessive rainfall. They highlighted the urgent need for central funding to assist with drought and disaster relief efforts in the region. The subject of financial assistance for farmers emerged prominently, reflecting the dire circumstances faced by those whose livelihoods are severely affected by adverse weather conditions.

Additionally, the MPs called for the Bharat Ratna, the nation’s highest civilian honour, to be awarded posthumously to noted social reformers from Maharashtra, such as Mahatma Jyotirao Phule, his spouse Savitribai Phule, and Anna Bhau Sathe. This request underscores the significance of acknowledging the contributions of these historical figures to social progress in India.

Loan Waivers And Healthcare Demands Discussed

Among the key demands raised was the implementation of loan waivers for farmers in Maharashtra. NCP (SP) MP Nilesh Dnyandev Lanke stated that compensation for losses suffered due to heavy rainfall has not yet been disbursed, making a loan waiver essential for many struggling farmers. He emphasised that immediate intervention is necessary to mitigate the financial strain on these individuals.

Furthermore, the MPs raised concerns about the rising number of cancer patients within Maharashtra. It was proposed that every district should have a dedicated cancer daycare hospital to better serve the needs of the population. Lanke insisted that these health facilities are crucial given the increasing prevalence of the disease and the associated healthcare challenges.

Mr Lanke reported that Prime Minister Modi received their requests positively and took detailed notes during the meeting. The MPs expressed hope for a constructive response from the Prime Minister’s office regarding the discussed issues, especially those involving financial assistance and healthcare provisions.

Political Context And The INDIA Alliance Position

The meeting’s timing is significant amid ongoing political discussions about the proposed Delimitation Bill. Speculation surrounds the position of the NCP (SP) within the broader INDIA alliance, particularly regarding the potential linkage between the Delimitation Bill and the Women’s Reservation Act. This has been a contentious topic within the political landscape, raising concerns over the representation of women in legislative bodies.

Prior to this meeting, Sachin Sawant, secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC), urged the NCP (SP) to assert the alliance’s firm stance on ensuring that the Women’s Reservation Act, passed in 2023, is implemented swiftly and without connection to the delimitation process. This call highlights the opposition’s desire for immediate action on women’s rights in politics, underscoring broader ethical considerations in legislative reforms.

The Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill of 2026, introduced in the Lok Sabha, aims to raise the number of seats in the Lower House to 850, alongside expediting the Women’s Reservation Bill. However, the bill did not achieve the necessary two-thirds majority needed for passage during the extended Budget Session, reflecting ongoing divisions among political factions regarding electoral reforms.
