In the first half of 2026, Pakistan recorded an alarming increase in violence with 3,172 incidents reported from January to June, as per a recent report broadcasted by Samaa TV. The report highlights persistent issues surrounding safety and violence across the nation, emphasising the widespread nature of these incidents.

Details of Violent Incidents Reported

Among the reported cases, 644 involved murder, while 462 related to kidnappings, illustrating the variety of violent acts occurring during this period. A significant number of these cases were associated with gender-based violence, raising ongoing concerns about the protection of vulnerable groups within society. Notably, the statistics revealed that 132 individuals lost their lives in what were classified as honour killings, suggesting deeply entrenched societal issues.

The report detailed that in around 27 per cent of these honour killing cases, the alleged offenders were known to the victims. In addition, husbands were identified as accused in 13 per cent of the murder cases reported. This indicates that many violent incidents occur within personal relationships, highlighting a troubling trend that warrants immediate attention.

Young adults, particularly those aged between 21 and 30, were responsible for a significant portion of the murder and killing incidents, raising alarms about the increase in violence among this demographic. Such trends pose urgent challenges that necessitate timely preventive strategies to address the underlying issues contributing to such behaviours.

The Regional Breakdown of Violence

The province of Punjab reported the highest number of violent incidents, accounting for 74 per cent of the total cases registered. Following Punjab, Sindh exhibited 17 per cent of the incidents, while Khyber Pakhtunkhwa accounted for 6 per cent of the reported violence. The remaining 3 per cent of cases arose from Pakistan-occupied Gilgit-Baltistan, Islamabad, and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

This distribution of violence indicates not only the severity of the problem in Punjab, but also highlights the challenges faced by other regions. The prevalence of violent incidents within Punjab reflects a complex array of socio-economic factors that exacerbate the situation.

The emphasis on gender-based violence within the report serves to underline the ongoing crisis affecting women and other vulnerable populations in Pakistan.
