Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and prominent member of the Congress party, has voiced his concerns regarding the police action against students in Jharkhand. Gandhi asserted that the use of force against student protesters is fundamentally unjustifiable. In a statement shared on social media platform X, he highlighted the students’ right to engage in peaceful protests and urged the state government led by Hemant Soren to address their concerns through constructive dialogue.

In his statement, Gandhi emphasised that “the use of force against students protesting in Jharkhand is wrong,” underscoring the importance of dialogue in finding solutions. He called on the Jharkhand government to listen to the students and resolve their grievances promptly, reinforcing the notion that dialogue should be the primary approach to handling such situations.

Clashes Erupt During ‘Vidhan Sabha Gherao’ March

Gandhi’s remarks came in the wake of clashes between student demonstrators and police forces during the ‘Vidhan Sabha Gherao’ march held in Ranchi. This march, orchestrated by the JPSC-JSSC Reform Morcha, sought to address alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations within the state. Reports indicate that the police resorted to tear gas, water cannons, and lathi charge after some protesters allegedly tried to breach barricades while advancing towards the Jharkhand Assembly.

During a press conference earlier in the day, Gandhi reiterated his condemnation of any violence against students who were partaking in peaceful protests, specifically referencing the unrest in Jharkhand. He clearly stated that violence against peaceful demonstrations is unacceptable, regardless of the location. He reinforced the message that the attack on peaceful protestors is fundamentally wrong, advocating for respect towards students exercising their democratic rights.

Amid the ongoing protests, a student leader, Devendra Nath Mahato, who has been on a hunger strike in Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium for the past nine days, mentioned that no official from the Jharkhand government had engaged in discussions with the students as of yet. This lack of communication further highlights the students’ grievances regarding the alleged irregularities in state recruitment exams.

Jharkhand Government Stresses Rule of Law

In response to the protests, Jharkhand Minister Deepika Pandey Singh acknowledged the importance of the democratic right to protest but indicated that such actions must remain within the constitutional framework. She pointed out that the government is committed to maintaining law and order, urging protesters to express their concerns within the prescribed legal boundaries.

Minister Singh further stated that the administration had been instructed to handle the situation with care, focusing on upholding law and order without resorting to violent measures. This statement aims to highlight the government’s position on balancing the right to protest with the necessity of maintaining peace and stability during such events.

The situation in Jharkhand remains tense as the student protests continue, raising significant concerns over the handling of the recruitment examination issues.
