National Security Adviser Ajit Doval addressed the 16th BRICS National Security Adviser meeting in New Delhi on June 23, highlighting the rise of non-traditional security challenges. He underscored that the digital transformation of society has led to new security threats, which require immediate attention. Doval pointed out that these challenges have evolved beyond conventional responses, necessitating innovative approaches.

During his remarks, Doval detailed how cyber threats and terrorism have become more nuanced and are now transcending national boundaries. He remarked on the importance of being vigilant towards these emerging threats that disrupt traditional security frameworks. His words resonated as he called for collective deliberations among participating nations to navigate these complexities.

Doval emphasised that the meeting aims to foster discussions on new frameworks for addressing these non-traditional security issues. He reiterated the importance of cooperation and communication among member states to tackle the multifaceted challenges posed by a rapidly digitising world.

Collaborative Efforts on Counter-Terrorism and ICT Security

In addition to addressing non-traditional threats, the National Security Adviser indicated that the agenda includes discussions on counter-terrorism strategies. The meeting will focus on the outcomes of two BRICS joint working groups, one dedicated to counter-terrorism and the other focusing on the security of information and communication technologies. These discussions aim to enhance cooperative security measures among BRICS nations.

Doval recognised the importance of shared security goals among member countries, asserting that collaboration is crucial for tackling the evolving landscape of threats. He expressed hope that participants would contribute valuable insights during these discussions to strengthen regional and global security frameworks.

Moreover, he highlighted that these joint efforts underline the significance of a united front against the backdrop of increasing complexities in the global security environment. The adoption of effective counter-terrorism measures and secure communication practices is essential for maintaining peace and stability.

Significance of BRICS Amid Global Challenges

Ajit Doval further expressed a positive outlook on the BRICS coalition, describing it as a unique alliance that plays a vital role in today’s geopolitical landscape. He remarked on the ongoing global uncertainties, including military conflicts and economic strains, which heighten the importance of the meeting’s discussions.

In his opening remarks, Doval articulated that current geopolitical instabilities demand a re-evaluation of established security frameworks. He noted that traditional instruments for conflict resolution are becoming increasingly ineffective, thus necessitating a reinforced commitment to multilateralism.

The NSA highlighted the foundation of BRICS, which was established to enhance the collective voice of emerging economies and facilitate collaboration among nations in the Global South. He affirmed the bloc’s commitment to institutional reforms and the importance of a collaborative approach in addressing international challenges.

The meeting commenced with a warm welcome from Doval to several distinguished guests, including Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Russian Security Council Secretary Sergey Shoigu, and other senior officials from Iran, the UAE, and South Africa. Following these initial proceedings, a group photograph with the heads of security from all participating countries was taken, marking the commencement of the discussions.
