The Vice Admiral is a graduate of the 38th Integrated Cadet Course at the Naval Academy in Goa and was commissioned into the Indian Navy on July 1, 1990. He holds the status of a Category A Sea King Air Operations Officer and is also noted for his proficiency in communication and electronic warfare. In addition to his military training, he is an alumnus of the Defence Services Staff College located in Wellington, and has completed the Naval Higher Command Course at the Naval War College in Goa, further enhancing his operational acumen.

Over his career, spanning more than 36 years, Vice Admiral Pramod has held various commanding, operational, instructional, and staff positions, both at sea and on land. Some of his key appointments include serving as the Executive Officer of INS Rajput, a Guided Missile Destroyer, and commanding both INS Abhay, an Anti-Submarine Warfare Patrol Vessel, and INS Shardul, a Landing Ship Tank.

His experience also extends to significant operational roles; he served as the Fleet Operations Officer of the Western Fleet during Operation Snow Leopard, which occurred in the wake of the Galwan incident. The Vice Admiral has participated in notable military operations such as Operation Vijay in 1999 and Operation Parakram in 2001, showcasing his active involvement in critical times for the nation.

Leadership Roles and Achievements

Ashore, Vice Admiral Pramod commanded INS Utkrosh, the Naval Air Station at Sri Vijaya Puram, and worked as Directing Staff at the Defence Services Staff College in Wellington. His contributions at Naval Headquarters include serving as Joint Director of the Naval Air Staff, and various leadership roles in aircraft acquisition.

His tenure saw him as a member of the Tactical Audit Group from 2006 to 2009 and the Indian Naval Strategic and Operational Council from 2016 to 2019. Upon his promotion to Rear Admiral, he took up appointments such as Deputy Commandant of the Indian Naval Academy and Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Air), culminating in his role as Flag Officer Commanding the Maharashtra Naval Area.

After being elevated to the rank of Vice Admiral, he acted as the Director General of Naval Operations from December 2023 to July 2026. In this capacity, he was pivotal in ensuring the readiness and strategic planning of the Navy, particularly during Operation Sindoor and maritime security efforts amid the ongoing West Asia Crisis.

Honours and Succession

Vice Admiral Pramod’s service has been consistently recognised for its distinction and operational leadership, earning him prestigious awards such as the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal in 2024 and the Yudh Seva Medal in 2025. His appointment as Deputy Chief of Naval Staff follows the retirement of Vice Admiral Tarun Sobti, who completed over 38 years of service on July 31, 2026.
