The Indian start-up Agnikul Cosmos has entered into a collaboration with ICEYE, a Finnish company specialising in Earth observation, focusing on the development, launch, and operation of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite systems from India. This agreement represents a significant advance in bolstering India’s sovereign space capabilities.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was recently signed between the two firms, which will see ICEYE’s expertise in SAR satellite technology combined with Agnikul’s indigenous capabilities for launching vehicles. This partnership aims to establish a comprehensive satellite manufacturing framework within India, leveraging Agnikul’s rockets for responsive launches.

SAR satellites are equipped with radar technology, distinguishing them from traditional optical satellites, as they can capture detailed images of the Earth regardless of time of day or weather conditions. ICEYE, recognised for operating the world’s largest SAR satellite constellation with over 70 satellites, brings significant experience to the partnership. Notably, Poland’s satellite system was operational within a year of contract signing, showcasing ICEYE’s efficiency in deployment.
