Devendra Mahto, leader of the Jharkhand Loktantrik Krantikari Morcha (JLKM), has been on a hunger strike for the last eleven days. This protest is aimed at addressing alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations within the state. Currently, he is receiving medical care at Sadar Hospital in Ranchi, where he was admitted after his health declined during the ongoing protest.

Mahto initiated his hunger strike to advocate for thousands of aggrieved students fighting for their rights. His condition worsened reportedly after he participated in a march aimed at drawing attention to their plight at the Jharkhand Assembly, where students expressed their frustrations over the handling of their recruitment process.

Communication with Authorities

In a recent letter directed to the civil surgeon of Ranchi, Mahto made a formal request to return to the protest site at Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium. He emphasised that while he is physically unwell, his commitment to the cause remains steadfast. His communication reflects not just his personal determination but also the collective spirit of the students he aims to represent.

Mahto stated that the unfolding events are not merely a protest but represent a critical responsibility he feels towards the youth engaged in this fight. In his social media communication, he succinctly expressed that although his body remains in the hospital, his spirit is with the demonstrators advocating for what they believe is a just cause.

He stated, “Today, I wrote a letter to the civil surgeon seeking permission to go to the Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium, the protest site. My body is undergoing treatment on the hospital bed, but my soul is at the satyagraha site where students and youth are engaged in a just struggle for their future.” This statement highlights both his dedication and the ongoing challenges faced by the student population in Jharkhand.

The protests led by students in Jharkhand have been ongoing for nineteen days, with many gathering to voice their discontent regarding the alleged misconduct in the recruitment examination process.
