Devendra Nath Mahto, a student leader and prominent figure in the ongoing protest regarding alleged corruption in the JPSC and JSSC examinations, has formally requested to leave Sadar Hospital to rejoin the protest site at Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium in Ranchi. Mahto has been undergoing treatment for 11 days after sustaining injuries from a police lathi-charge on August 10, 2026, while participating in a demonstration against perceived irregularities in the recruitment process.

In a written application addressed to the Civil Surgeon, Mahto expressed that his emotional state is significantly impacted by being away from his fellow protesters. He articulated that his physical ailments were overshadowed by his commitment to the ongoing struggle for justice, stating, “My body is undergoing treatment in the hospital bed, but my soul and resolve are at the Satyagraha site.”

Continuing the Indefinite Hunger Strike

As of August 12, 2026, Mahto’s hunger strike has entered its eleventh day, during which he has maintained that it will persist until complete justice is obtained. His handwritten appeal highlighted the responsibility he feels towards the thousands of students who are rallying for their rights and future. He reiterated that their collective struggle goes beyond individual needs, framing it as a moral obligation to uphold their trust and hope.

Describing the emotional turmoil caused by his separation from the protest, Mahto noted, “Being away from them is a matter of mental agony for me, much more than the physical pain.” He is appealing for understanding from medical staff, requesting permission to return to where the protests are taking place.

In his communication, Mahto has assured medical personnel that he would adhere to all required health precautions should he be granted permission to leave the hospital for the protest site.

Context of the Protests and Police Action

The protests led by Mahto and thousands of aspirants were sparked by allegations of misconduct in the Joint Public Service Commission (JPSC) and the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC) examinations. Protestors are demanding the cancellation of the JSSC-CGL examination, an independent inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the alleged discrepancies, and an overhaul of the recruitment framework. These demands reflect a growing discontent with how the state government has addressed their concerns.

The situation took a turn for the worse on August 10, when peaceful demonstrators were met with aggressive police tactics, including lathi-charges and the use of water cannons. Reports indicate that this police action occurred while the aspirants were attempting to march towards the state assembly during the ‘Vidhan Sabha gherao’ event.

Reiterating their frustrations, protestors feel that their demands have not been adequately heard or addressed by state authorities, adding urgency to Mahto’s resolve and the collective efforts of those involved in the demonstrations.
