A tragic incident occurred in Kolkata on Wednesday morning, resulting in the death of a woman named Sumitra Das. While driving, she lost control of the vehicle, which subsequently rolled into a nearby pond located within the Prafulla Kanan Utsav Garden. The depth of the pond was estimated to be between 10 to 12 feet, causing the car to become completely submerged upon entry.

Eyewitness accounts describe chaotic moments as numerous local residents rushed to the scene to assist. Upon witnessing the car enter the water, several onlookers immediately entered the pond in a bid to rescue Das. Despite their rapid response, their attempts were unsuccessful, prompting them to alert the police and fire department shortly thereafter.

Emergency responders arrived promptly at the site to conduct a search and rescue operation. Their efforts included utilising a crane to extract the vehicle from the pond. Unfortunately, after nearly an hour of searching, rescuers discovered that Das had already drowned while still trapped inside the car.

Sumitra Das was a resident of Keshtapur and had previously taken her daughter to school earlier that same day using a scooter. After dropping her off, Das parked the scooter and reportedly began practising her driving skills in the car, similar to routine sessions conducted on other days. Witnesses noted that she often had a driver accompany her during these practice drives but was alone at the time of the incident.

The events leading up to the tragedy have raised questions among local residents. Some noted that the presence of a more experienced driver in previous practice sessions may have contributed to her confidence while driving alone. There are concerns regarding the safety measures for novice drivers in such practice scenarios.
