This duration is critical as it corresponds to the time it takes for radioactive elements to decay to levels similar to those found in natural uranium ore. Situated deep beneath a Finnish forest, the facility is engineered to provide a long-term solution to a pressing global issue.

Located in Eurajoki, southwest Finland, the repository’s depth reaches 433 metres below the surface. This underground system comprises fortified tunnels carved into ancient rock that has withstood the test of time, providing a robust environment for secure waste storage. Finland’s initiative represents a significant step towards addressing concerns surrounding the disposal of nuclear waste, which has been an ongoing challenge since the inception of nuclear power.

After being encased, these canisters will be lowered into specially drilled holes within the tunnels, and subsequently sealed using bentonite clay, a natural material that functions effectively as a moisture-activated barrier.

Efforts towards obtaining final regulatory approval from Finland’s nuclear safety authority are advancing, with the anticipated authorization expected to be granted within this month. Following this, the operator, Teollisuuden Voima Oyj (TVO), hopes to commence operations by the end of this year or early next year. This timeline underscores the urgency and importance of establishing a viable long-term solution for nuclear waste management.

As various countries continue to store their nuclear waste temporarily in cooling pools, Onkalo represents an innovative advancement towards achieving a permanent method for waste disposal. While the Onkalo repository has been lauded for its innovative design and construction, experts have identified potential risks that need consideration. The primary concerns centre around the corrosion of the copper canisters over time and the impact of seismic activity during potential future ice ages. Continuous risk assessments carried out over many years have provided consistently positive outcomes, thereby bolstering confidence in the facility’s long-term safety.

Researchers and officials from Posiva, the waste management company responsible for the project, emphasise the critical importance of ensuring safety for eternity. Lauri Parviainen, a chemist at Posiva, highlighted that the facility must maintain its integrity indefinitely, given the nature of the materials being stored.
